Marty Hendin Obituary

Longtime St. Louis Cardinals front office executive Marty Hendin died Saturday night at the age of 59.

Hendin had worked for the team since 1973 in a variety of positions, including public relations, marketing and community relations.

"If you were a Cardinals fan over the past 35 years, there was a good chance that you had either met Marty or heard his name," Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt said in a statement released by the team Sunday morning. "He was friends with everyone from Hall of Famers to the casual fan. If you were a Cardinals fan, you were a friend of Marty. The entire Cardinals organization extends its sincere condolences to Marty's family and countless friends."

Hendin was active in many St. Louis charitable causes, including the team's Cardinals Care program.

"No one cared more for the Cardinals then Marty," Cardinals President Mark Lamping said. "He was an institution in the St. Louis community for many years and will be missed by his co-workers and by the thousands of Cardinals fans across the country who had the pleasure of knowing him."

Hendin is survived by his mother, Pearl; wife, Ronna Hendin; a son, Rob Hendin; daughter-in-law, Lauren Aronson and his sister, Linda Harber. Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 15 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at B'nai El Temple, 11411 North Outer 40 Dr, St Louis, MO 63131.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marty Hendin Fund at B'nai El, Cardinals Care, March of Dimes and the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of St. Louis.

I considered Marty my best friend in high school. When I moved away from St. Louis, we lost touch to some extent. The last time I saw him was at our last high school reunion, and I had no idea he was sick at the time(if indeed he was). Marty is the only person I know who always did what he wanted from the very beginning; and that was to work for the St. Louis Cardinals. He will be missed greatly.

Dear Ronna and family,
Our deepest sympathy to you and your family. My husband and I had the pleasure of being on one of the Cardinal Cruises with you and Marty. He was so much fun.(It was a surprise 50th birthday present for my husband, Joe). Marty was always very gracious whenever he saw us at the stadium. We are sure he will be missed terribly, but take comfort in the fact that his life was indeed a triumph.
Sincerely,

To the Family of Marty:

I was out of town all last week and was just told about his passing on 1/22. I met Marty in 2000 when I worked for a company that wanted to put advertising in Busch Stadium, but we couldn't based on competition already there. However, I went to lunch with Marty a couple of times, and he "talked me into" a place on the Communications committee with the March of Dimes. He was a great man, a humanitarian, and a heck of a lot of fun to talk with. I also loved his office in the old stadium. Marty had quite a life. He will truly be missed. God Bless.

Hendin Family:
Marty and I first met and worked together as volunteers on the Advertising Club of StL Membership Committee. Since then I have had the privilege to call him a friend. He was the warmest, kindest person I've ever known and Marty never forgot who I was or where we first met. When he saw me in my first red car (1986) he smiled and said "I like that color". I will always remember his faithful presence at our meetings and his dedication to the Ad Club. Rest in Peace Big Guy, the world already misses you.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Hendin Family. I was so very fortunate to work for Marty just prior to him receiving his dream job with his Cardinals. Marty was the Editor of the Fairview Heights Tribune and allowed me to get some college credits covering the Belleville City Council. He was kind, helpful, and encouraging; the perfect boss. Marty was one of those rare people that made everyone around him better.

To the Hendin Family,
We have only met Marty a few times over the years. He graciously donated Cardinal paraphernalia and attended a benfit for a local charity given at our home in Webster Groves, 10 years ago. We purchased a chance to met the Cardinals and my daughter threw out the first pitch. This was a very exciting evening for the whole family. Marty couldn't have been nicer. We had a very successful party with a hugh turn out. By the calls I have received since Marty's passing you would have thought Marty was the only guest. People have called from St. Louis to mention his passing to me, because they met him at our house. He really made a memorable impression to all. I know he was a great part of St. Louis and Cardinal Baseball. I know he will be truly missed. We wish to extend our family's deepest sympathy.

What a blessing it was for all of us to have had Marty in our lives.

"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Ralph Waldo Emerson

Marty gave so much to everyone...how lucky we all were to have know him.

Dear Ronna and Rob,
It is so difficult to sum up our feelings in this small space. Marty was just a one of a kind guy. I can't imagine Cardinal baseball without his smiling face down on the field. We were lucky to make many of the Cardinal cruises with all of you and will cherish those memories.
Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

We will truly miss Marty. We went to UMSL with Marty and he was partly responisble for my husband and I being together - 37 years now. We didn't get to see Marty much after our college years - only when attending a Cardinal game or a special even he organized at UMSL honoring the UMSL basketball team from the early 70's. When I think of our days at UMSL I always think of Marty - he was the man on campus during those years. We still have a couple of copies of the Current with articles by Marty. He loved UMSL basketball and supported all the activites. Marty was truly a remarkable man and one that anyone who knew him will never forget.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Marty's passing. He was Cardinal Baseball. We so enjoyed the 40th U City Class of '66 4oth Reunion because of the brunch and tour of the "new " Busch Stadium courtesy of Marty. I recently lost my husband, Izzy, so I can appreciate your loss. Marty was our classmate at U. City and UMSL. Our thoughts and sympathies to Ronna and the family.

Dear Ronna and Family,

Please know that all of us who knew Marty share his loss with you and that some of these kind words and remembrances will help you get through this difficult time. I first met Marty in 1964 when he would brave the elements to watch our class team (the Sophomore U. City baseball team) play. Often times, he was the only one in the stands except for a few parents. He loved baseball, and in the most respectful sense, I have always referred to Marty as the “ultimate fan.” He stayed true to that description in so many ways and I always felt that he was so blessed to be able to live the life that he did. Collectively, as friends and as members of the unique fraternity known as Cardinal Nation, we were the ones even more blessed in that we were able to enjoy the fruits of Marty’s passion and his wonderful warm nature. After moving away from the area, one of my most cherished memories was one night in 1985 when I had gone to a Cardinal game, but the game was rained out. I had the incredible good fortune of reuniting with Marty that evening and he invited me into his office. As soon as I walked in, I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I saw all the Cardinal memorabilia. As usual, Marty didn¹t say much, but as he was finding assorted trinkets that I could take back to my children, I gawked at the pictures of him with such notables as President Reagan and Miss Universe scattered among other pictures and mementoes that filled the room. Every time since then, Marty invited me and my family back to the Cardinal offices whenever we were in town and took in a game. It was always one of our highlights during our trips to St. Louis, especially for my kids. The work he did for our class reunion in 2006 was so typical Marty as he arranged for us to have Sunday brunch at the new stadium. All of us who were there were so awestruck and we all knew it was Marty’s vision and following through on that vision that turned this event into a memory to be cherished for a lifetime. As corny as it may sound I, for one, can envision the ultimate reunion in a much better place knowing that Marty will be there and I can once again say, “Hi Ho Hendo!” when I see him. Until then, we can all look to Marty’s wonderful attributes and use them as a guide for experiencing a better and more meaningful life here.

Dear Ronna, Rob and members of the Hendin family,

I will truly miss Marty. He was a warm and friendly soul and was very good to me over the 20 plus years that I knew him. He gave me my first opportunity to sing at Busch Stadium, he helped me with a number of Charity events, including "A Cardinal Christmas," CFD, etc. Marty will long be remembered in the community and I will think of him each time I step out of the field to sing. Today's service was very special. Rob, your words about your dad were very warm and genuine. In the days ahead, may God be with you. Press on. Blessings,

To Marty's family. I am so sorry to hear of the death of Marty. Marty was a man of his word and always so helpful. He had a great sense of humor and an even more sense of caring for others, and he knew when to be serious to get the job done. I only knew him for a short time while serving together on a local board, he was a tremendeous help with great ideas. He will be missed by many for his generosity, kindness and hard work.He was respected and so well liked.

I do not know if any other members of the Stan Musial Society of Washington, DC will find their way to this guest book, so let me mourn a space on their behalf if they don’t and say that knowing Marty over the many years that he flew in for our luncheons (bearing his inevitable souvenirs and inimitable anecdotes) was a total joy for the Redbird diaspora. There were so many of us, and we were from everywhere (although on one memorable occasion everyone else at my table was from Webster Groves—they told me that was pretty amazing ). Marty was the perfect guest. His kindness, as evidenced by the sentiments here, was known to all; but so was his enthusiasm for our company. He had a sense of wonder which reminded us why we remained Cardinals fans, and his platform wizardry surpassed any other baseball representative I have known. I am happy that he found his dream job with the big club; we, all the members of the Society, are doubly happy that he—and Rob-- found his way to us.

Dear Ronna and Family:

Over the course of 20+ years, conversations with Marty Hendin always included loving references and updates of his family. We grieve with you for the fine man who cared so much.

We knew Marty professionally as individuals when I was with Downtown St. Louis Inc. and Michael was with Famous Barr. After our marriage we knew him as a friend in St. Louis. Our friendship continued with our moves to Pittsburgh and to Hilton Head Island. In our retirement years we sought him out at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter and when returning to St. Louis at Busch…he was a “must see”. God Bless you all. Prayers and Marty’s love will sustain.

Dear Ronna,Rob & family,
My sincere sympathy to all of you in the passing of a "great man". I had the privelege of being his friend since 1990 and working with him in the Cardinal Care Organazation and other projects.
Marty did not know the word "selfish", he was one of the most giving individuals I have ever met. I am proud to have known Marty and will always cherish my memories of him.
I will open my eyes to see all he has left with the bounty of friends he had in his life. There is not another soul that will ever replace his. Marty will be like the wind...you cannot see him, but you will always feel him.
I know without a doubt Marty served his purpose that God had planned for him.
He was and will always be the Biggest Cardinal Fan St. Louis ever had!
My prayers are with you.

Marty was a great guy whom I've known since we were 8 years old. I read the wonderful 'The Great Hendini' in the Post today, and after wiping away a few tears, it brought a smile to my face to think of Marty up in Heaven, with the body and spirit of an athlete, playing ball with other Cardinals. The Cards have lost their greatest fan ever. Since I first met him, I knew he wanted to be a Card. I was thrilled for him when (while we were working together at St. Luke's Hospital after UMSL) he got his first 'real' newspaper job and then went on to the Cards. He was SO proud of that job and he deserved it. About 600 of us graduated together from University City High School in 1966. I think Marty knew everyone - and they certainly knew him.

I met Marty in 1979 when I was a photography intern for United Press International. He was always willing to help all photogs with our photo needs, and did so through the next 20+ years I covered the Cardinals. His office, and its contents were legendary. He will be missed.

What a tragedy in the passing of Marty Hendin. What a terrific and honorable man we have lost.I had the pleasure of doing an intership with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1986 while attending McKendree College. What an honor it was to not only have met Marty Hendin, but to have worked for him. I will never forget his sense of humor and his love of the Cardinals speaks for itself. He did everything he could to make my internship memorable and enjoyable. Since that time, I ran into Marty at games, at the Fox, he even spoke at my Rotary Club in O'Fallon, IL. Always the same Marty, always had time to visit with me. It's hard to imagine all the lives he has touched in so many positive ways. May his kindness, his sense of humor and his love of the Cardinals live on in all of us. And may we live life by Marty's example. God's Blessings to the family.

When I first heard that Marty was in the hospital, I was shocked.

Since hearing of his passing, three memories of him come to mind:
(1) In Jan. 2006, Marty came to my synagogue for a SPORTS NIGHT, as the key speaker. Throughout his entire speech until the end, I can remember debating on whether I should say HI, after all we had been classmates. Well, I did, and I'm so happy about that. I took a few pictures of him w/others, but then someone offered to take my pic w/Marty, too! What a nice memory I will have of him by looking at this picture.

(2) Then later that year, we met at our 40th high school reunion (Sept 2006). For the third day's events, Marty invited us to the stadium for brunch and a tour of the field. That was so much fun!! Marty was such a grand host. Thank you!

(3) And this last time in Nov. 2007, when we had a mini-reunion get together at Frank & Helen's. We had been tryin' to get Marty to come to one of them, but this was his first. We all were so very happy that he could join us! I thought it was so neat when he took off his *ring* and let everyone look at it up close.

And in closing, I just wanted to say: Marty will be missed! His mere presence was a present! What a gift!!!!

I first met Marty in the 1980's when the Cardinal Caravan came to Springfield Illinois. He was always gracious & had time to talk with anyone who would approach him. I was stunned to read of his passing. It will be sad to not see him at the Caravans or on the field for presentations. My thoughts & prayers are with his family. It was a pleasure to talk with Marty over the years.

I was fortunate enough to accompany Marty on two of his "Magical Media Tours". Marty would take radio personalities from various stations to Spring Training and when I worked mornings at KLOU my partner and I went on the trips. We'd broadcast live from the hotel in the mornings and go to the games in the afternoons. Marty always made sure the ladies in the group had players to interview outside the locker room while the guys were inside. He treated us like royalty. I have many other stories but they all speak to what a truly wonderful man he was. My heart goes out to his family. He will be missed.

Ronna & family,

It is with deepest regrets that I heard of Marty’s passing this morning on the news. Marty was a good friend to me. He was always great to work with during the years I spent with the Cardinal and Marlins organization. He will truly be missed by fans and friends. I know that words are truly inadequate at a time like this. However, please know that he will be sorely missed by Cardinal Nation and all of the friends he made along the path of his illustrious career. Please accept my deepest sympathies.

When Marty Hendin was President of the Sports Club at U. City, I was elected secretary/treasurer, and worked alongside him for 2 years, in that position organizing the many events, and activities the club had planned. It was an amazing time for me to be in charge of one of the largest clubs in the school with him. He had to be the most incredible man I had ever met in sports, considering my dad trained boxing champion Virgil Akins, I was friend with Joe Lewis, and I was at the Pro Bowl with the World Champion Dallas Cowboys as a guest in 1988; on the field during the actual game. I was also part of the press corps in 1987, when the Cardinals lost the World Series, but I represented KFOX, and KROQ from Los Angeles, so rubbed elbows with Marty every day during that series, as he assisted in getting me field passes for every game, and a seat in the press box. My connection to the Cardinals during the 80's would not have been possible without the assistance of Martin. He was unable to be as athletic as he wanted to be in high school, but his passion for sports never prevented him from ascending to his goals and outstanding success which he achieved with the St. Louis Cardinals. I was proud to work alongside Marty in high school running the huge Sports Club (Over 150 members), handling the finances, and reports from our many meetings. I was lucky to see Marty for a moment during a game this last year when my Dad Died, Fred Malorrus, and I flew in for the funeral. I was lucky to sit right next to the Cardinal dugout and give Marty a hello, for a game against the Royals, which we won, and it was nice to see Marty one last time. I will alway remember Marty Hendin as a role model, a friend, an inspiration, and someone who inspired me also to go into broadcasting, sports prognostications, (Predicting several Cardinal successes including this last World Series, and the ones in 82, and 87) and also as a person who inspired me never to give up on my goals, my successes, and my attitude. I will miss you old friend, and thanks for sharing so much of your vast knowledge of sports with me in high school and afterwards.
Your eternal friend,
Farley Malorrus

Ronna and Robbie,

You know that Marty was the father of the Cardinal Family, and we are proud to be related.

From our relationship while working with the March of Dimes, Cardinal Care, or while cruising the high seas each January, he will always be with us. Each game this year, as we look in from left field, we will still see his smile behind the festivities at home plate.

He had a way of making everyone feel like they were a special part of the Cardinal organization, and we saw him give of himself far more than anyone would have ever expected.

Our hearts are forever with you and will be there if there is anything you ever need.

Dear Robbie,
I know you go by Rob now, but you were one of my greatest friends in grade school and both of your parents were always so good to me. Your parents didn't have a daughter but your mom helped with my girl scouts at Andrews Academy and so loved all of us girls. I saw your Dad several times after high school and always asked me questions about my life and encouraged me to be a better person. I am so happy that you have a wife in your life to support you in this rough time. I wish that I wasn't in Denver so that I could be with your faimly at this time. I always had great times with you and appreciate all your dad did with our class and took us to the ballgames and got us special attention. At 31 I Still brag about your dad and how special your family is. I wish that I could spend some time with you all because you have all made a big impact on my life. My tears are for you. I love you all. Kristen Sehl

I was deeply saddened to read of Marty's death in today's Post-Dispatch. I first heard about Marty's illness in Bernie Miklasz' column a few weeks ago. I had every intention of calling or sending a get well card, but, as usual, I got busy and didn't follow thru. Marty and I started with the Cards about the same time in 1973. During my time with the club, I learned a great deal from Marty as I watched him take the marketing and promotional efforts from nothing to one of the best in baseball. Along the way, Marty and Ronna both became good friends, as I watched Robby grow and flourish, as well as the club.
Marty loved what he did, and did so for 35 years. I, along with Cardinal Nation, will miss him and his energy.
My best to Ronna and Robby.

Ronna,
Norm and I were so sadden by the news about Marty. We enjoyed him so much, his great sense of humor, his quick analysis of any Cardinal situation, his inclusive and welcoming manner... and his gift of making you feel no problem was too difficult to solve.

When we saw him down on the field or in the labyrinth of the stadium, we had the feeling that all was well...Marty was handling it. On the cruises he made every gathering a party and everyone feel as if he/she was a part of the festivities. He was everywhere and no request went unfulfilled or unanswered. We asked for a lot and he gave more. He was one of the most giving and caring people we have known.

To us Marty was Cardinal Baseball. We couldn't think of the baseball season without thinking of Marty...starting with Winter WarmUp and continuing through September. He will always be a part of the Cardinals and on our list of the Cardinal Greats we have known.

We will miss him dearly!
Sincerely, Norm and Joan Krumrey

I had the privilage to work with Marty on various projects and fund raisers for the Asthma and Allergy foundation. He was always so willing to give/get as much as he could from the Cardinal organization for the kids that was humanly possible. I always enjoyed being with him and his heart was so,so big. His granddaughter was in the fashion show for the AAFA and he was great fun.

Marty- I will miss you. You were a gentle person and great joy to know. My sympathy to his family. You passed me every game and I'll miss your fun comments.

I only met Mr. Hendin a few times. He is the father of my collegue at CBS NEWS ...Rob Hendin. Our prayers are for his family. We will miss Rob tearing open the care packages of baseball memorabilia that arrived with regularity from his dad.

Mr. Hendin left us with something too: his son who is one of the kindest people I know and a first class journalist. Thanks Marty.

Very shocked and saddened. A great loss for the Cardinals family and for the fans that got to meet and know him. Praying that his family and associates will be comforted in their memory of Marty, who was always in a good humor. One of the truly good guys that will be sorely missed.
