Michael Dyer Obituary

Michael Dyer

Dr. Michael Hugh Dyer, 84, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 17, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.

Dr. Dyer attended the University of Illinois School of Dentistry. He completed his residency at both the University of Illinois Research and Educational Hospital in Chicago and the University of Texas VA Hospital in Houston, Texas. Dr. Dyer received his M.S. in Oral Surgery in 1963.

While in MS from 1957-1960, Dr. Dyer served in the Air Force as Chief of Oral Surgery at Keesler AFB, in Biloxi, Miss. In 1963, Dr. Dyer began his oral surgery career in Belleville after joining Dr. Bruno Kwapis in his practice. He soon became a partner in the practice and enjoyed many years of happiness doing practicing oral surgery with his colleagues, Dr. Kwapis, Dr. Knox, Dr. Miller and Dr. Beehner, their long-time office manager, Shirley Morman, and their office staff.

During his career in Belleville, Dr. Dyer was on staff at Memorial Hospital, St. Elizabeth's Hospital, and the St. Louis University Hospital, (Firmin Desloge). He also had a passion for teaching and enjoyed serving as an Associate Professor-Oral Surgery at St. Louis University and a Clinical Professor in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medium.

During his lifetime, Dr. Dyer was a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and was licensed in Oral & Maxillofacial surgery in both Illinois and Missouri. He was a member of the American Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, the Illinois Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, the American Dental Association, the St. Clair and Madison District Dental Societies, and numerous other organizations.

What Dr. Dyer was best known for was his strong faith in Christ his Savior, his love of family, his passion and expertise in the field of oral surgery and his unconditional love and kindness toward others. During his life, some of his favorite times were spent enjoying church activities with his dear friends at St. Matthew Methodist Church and special times with his dear friend, Robert "Rev" Souders. Dr. Dyer and his wife enjoyed traveling together throughout the world together and were blessed to have 60 years of marriage together before his passing.

Dr. Dyer was preceded in death by his parents, his son John David Dyer, and his three special aunts whom he loved dearly, Margaretta, Dorothy and Charlotte.

His memory will be honored by his wife of 60 years, Kay Lynne; his children, Kathy S. Dyer Morgan of Belleville, Ill., Michael A. (Kim) Dyer of Belleville, Ill., Carolyn M. (Peter Herrschaft) Dyer of New York, N.Y., Chris M. Korte of San Diego, Calif., and Mary E. (John) Terrando of Waxshaw, N.C. He is loved and will be missed by his seven grandchildren, John (Krystle) Morgan, Joe Morgan, Kelley Dyer, David (Sarah) Dyer, Daniel Morgan, Sarah Terrando, Michael Terrando; four great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, David K. Smith and wife Donna; niece, Susan (Eric) Zimmer; and other relatives, family and friends.
