Richard Schmieg
Richard Lee Schmieg, 74, of Granite City, Ill., born Nov. 19, 1932, in Granite City, Ill., passed away at 7:50 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City, Ill.
Mr. Schmieg proudly served his country from 1951 until 1955, with the United States Air Force. He retired in 1995 from Granite City Steel after 39 years of dedicated service as an electrician. He will be remembered for the love of his family and the special times shared with his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching the nature and animals around him and had a special love of fishing and hunting.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, John and Emma, nee Schmidt, Schmieg; and two brothers, Virgil and Harold Schmieg.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 44 years, Georgia "Jan," nee Richard, Schmieg, whom he married Nov. 3, 1962, in St. Louis, Mo. He is survived and will dearly be missed by two daughters and sons in law, Sherri "Susie" and James Rogers of Granite City, Ill., and Diane and Kerry Slayton of Granite City, Ill.; four grandchildren, James (Ashley) Rogers III, Russell Manion Jr., Nicole Rogers, Kerry "KJ" Slayton Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Jada and Alex Rogers; two sisters, Jackie Waltermate of Granite City, Ill., and Doris Yack of Murphysboro, Ill.; one brother and sister in law, Marvin and Viola Schmieg of Granite City, Ill.; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.
In honor of Richards wishes, there will be no services and those desiring may make memorials to the family or to a charity of one's choice.
