Robert Diehl Obituary

Robert Diehl
Robert Edward "Bob" Diehl, 87, of Belleville, Ill., born Aug. 5, 1921, in Belleville, Ill., died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, at St. Paul's Home, Belleville, Ill.
Mr. Diehl was chef production manager for Memorial Hospital before retiring in 1999. He was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill.
After enlisting in the United States Coast Guard on Sept. 28, 1942, Bob began his service aboard the USS O.V. Peterson DE 152. As a proud member of the Coast Guard, his service took him across the Atlantic Ocean many times, escorting ship convoys to Casablanca, North Africa, Londonderry, England; and eventually through the Panama Canal to the Pacific Ocean and on escort missions to Japan. Bob was part of the USS Peterson's crew that sank the UBoat 550 after forcing the German crew to surrender in the North Atlantic. He was honorably discharged as an E-5 ship's cook second class in St. Louis, Mo., on Dec. 19, 1945.

Eternal Father, Strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bid'st the mighty ocean deep,
Its own appointed limits keep;
O hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea.
O Trinity of love and power!
Our brethren shield in danger's hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe;
Protect them wheresoe'er they go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee,
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.
Amen.
- The Navy Hymn

Surviving are his five children, Sharon (Dwight) Bretsch of Belleville, Ill., Patricia (Howard) Rackley of Disputanta, Va., Barbara (Tony) Yeager of Edwardsville, Ill., Dennis (Susan) Diehl of Swansea, Ill., and Peggy (David) Roche of Belleville, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Jack (Jeanette) Zinkan; a sister-in-law, Shirley Zinkan; and two nephews, Allen Schott and Robert Schott.

I really wish I could have been there to say goodbye to grandpa. I know he is happy to be reunited with his wife but he will be greatly missed. I will always remember going to grandma/grandpa's house and running to the candy bowl! Grandpa was always outside in his garden and grandma was in the kitchen. It's sad to lose them both in 3 years but now they can spend eternity together, which is all they ever wanted.

Peggy and the Diehl family,
I was sad to hear of your Dad's passing. The obituary was a wonderful tribute to him.
It gave me a chance to recall fond memories of both your mom and dad, as we were growing up. They were so welcoming and kind, and treated me as one of their own.
Mey deepest sympathy to you all.

To the Diehl family,

You have my deepest sympathy in the loss of your father, I work with Peggy and she has kept me informed about your father during this time. Peggy has been a great friend since I have known her at Lewis, Rice, we have shared many things together over the years of knowing each other.

Sharon, Patty, Barb, Dennis and Peggy,

I have so many wonderful memories of both of your parents when I lived on Garfield Street growing up with my Grandmother. Your Dad always called me Debbie Reynolds and I remember that he was a great cook and he was always puttering in the yard doing something. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this most difficult time.

To the family of Bob,

For years I worked with Bob at Memorial. What he taught me was valuable and he made a great impact on my life. We miss him at Memorial and treasure the years we had. What I think was Bobs stength was his honesty and compassion. He was always a class act. He was most proud of his family. I will be out of town so I will not be able to attend any of the services but you will be in my thoughts.
