Scott J. "Cupcake" Tebbe

Scott Tebbe Obituary

It started out as a fun event to raise money for children's playground equipment.

Sunday's fourth annual St. Rose Tractor Drive drew more than 100 tractors pulling decorated wagons and trailers. They were loaded with festivalgoers making a poker run.

But an 18-year-old driving one of the tractors fell off on the outskirts of Jamestown. The tractor rolled over Scott J. "Cupcake" Tebbe and he died.

"It hurts," said Jeff Kampwerth of St. Rose, one of the organizers of the event. "It's a small town. We all know each other so well."

Tebbe graduated this year from Central High School in Breese and was an officer in the school's Future Farmers of America chapter. He was working at his family's farm and worked for Mid-West Drilling in Missouri.

Police said several people were injured.

More than 100 tractors, many of them antiques, were involved in the event. They pulled wagons and trailers filled with people, including babies. The wagons had home-made benches, old bus seats, picnic tables or lawn furniture on them to haul the festivalgoers. According to witnesses, one wagon was a double-decker; another had an agricultural watering trough jokingly referred to as a "Hoosier hot tub."

The tractors left at noon and paraded around the St. Rose area to various farms and farm-related business so participants could pick up playing cards in an effort to put together a winning poker hand. A flyer for the event stated the cost to enter was $20 per tractor, and $5 more for each additional poker hand.

Kampwerth said the St. Rose Development Club, a service group which sponsored the event and maintains a park in the unincorporated community, planned to put the proceeds toward playground equipment.

Dennis Sturgeon, a clerk at Little Rose's General Store, said the mood in town Monday morning was somber.

"You can tell something's wrong with the town," he said.

Sturgeon added, "It was a good event, benefited a good thing."

The Rev. Ed Schaefer, pastor at St. Rose Catholic Church for the past 13 years, said the community is tight-knit and deeply religious.

"There's not much you can say. Pray and hope the pain finally goes away," Schaefer said. "It's a test, that's for sure."

Schaefer said Tebbe's grandmother was the housekeeper at the church rectory when Schaefer came to St. Rose.

Poker runs are common in Clinton County. They often include stops at taverns and veterans clubs.

Jim Clanton, owner of the Pat's Place tavern in Jamestown, said he was at his home near the tavern Sunday evening and saw a few of the wagon-pulling tractors outside the bar. But he said Pat's Place was not an official stop on the poker run.

"I think it was around the six o'clock hour," Clanton said. "It wasn't a full line of a hundred-some tractors down there."

Clanton said he thinks some participants in the tractor event may have left the main group and gone their own way.

The poker run, which started at the park in St. Rose, was supposed to end there with music provided by a disc jockey.

Chief Deputy Mark Etter of the Clinton County Sheriff's Department said the tractor being driven by Tebbe was the only vehicle involved in the accident at Jamestown Road and Pierron Road. He was pulling a wagon with the tractor.

"He fell off and the tractor rolled over him. Do we know exactly what happened? Not really," Etter said. "For one reason or another, he didn't make the turn."

Etter said there were several people in the wagon, and some of them suffered injuries. Additional information was not available on the identities of the passengers or the extent of their injuries.

Etter said it's not yet clear why the group was in the Jamestown area. He said routine toxicology tests will be performed to determine if alcohol was a factor.

To Dan, Sandy, Matt and the rest of the Tebbe Family,

Scott was one of the greatest people I ever knew. He is in a better place now, although he had to go. I will never forget his smile or his laugh that he held every day. We have lots of memories from grade school and high school. I will never forget how I sat beside him during graduation and made each other laugh during the whole ceremony. He will be missed dearly. May God bless Scott and the Tebbe Family.

You might not remember me- "Mrs. Lyman". But, as a past St. Rose Teacher's Aide, I remember Scott as a fun little kid in grade school! I'm sorry I didn't have the joy of watching him grow into "Cupcake" as he's now referred to by friends. He must have continued to be the great kid I remember! My heart and prayers are with all of you as you deal with your loss of Scott. Take care of each other.

Please accept out deepest sympathy. We did not know your son but we are impressed that he was so willing to do charities for the community. We will be praying for your family in the days and months to come. May you find peace and comfort in our Lord and draw near to Him. We never know why God calls us Home when He does, but we can be thankful for the memories He allowes us to make with our loved ones. Always reflect on those happy days and the things your son has done for the community and know that God is now caring for Him in the same way.

"The Broken Chain"
"We new little that morning that
God was going to call your name,
In life we loved you dearly,
in death we do the same.
It broke out hearts to lose you,
you did not go alone;
for part of us went with you,
the day God called you home.
You left us with peaceful memories,
your love is still our guide;
and though we cannot see you,
you are always at our side.
Now the chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same;
But as God calls us one by one,
The Chain will link again!”

The loss of Cupcake is a true tragedy that brings heartache to all of Clinton county. If it is possible, try to find comfort in knowing that Cupcake, his family and friends are in the thoughts, hearts and prayers of many. I know your son was a great friend to our daughter, Elisha, and to many others in our community. He has touched their lives in ways they will never forget.

My thoughts and prayers are with you! A family friend had given us this poem when my brother had left us, and I wanted to share it with you...

Lonely is our lives without you
Life to us is not the same
All the world would be like heaven
If we could have you back again

The happy hours we once enjoyed
How sweet their memory still
But death has left a vacant place
This world can never fill

With deepest sympathy,

To Dan, Sandy, Matt & Janet as well as all our friends and family in St. Rose - our hearts go out to you during this time of sorrow and grief, now and in the days ahead. A day of fun and excitement turned tragic - we'll never know why it had to happen this way but we all know God has a plan. A great loss for St. Rose but you can bet he'll be watching over each and every one of you from above. Let all the good times and great memories prevail over the sorrow and grief. Although we can't be with you to share your pain, know that our thoughts and prayers are with you always.

"No Tears Past The Gate"
Someone new has entered our eternal home above-
the heavenly gate has opened wide to welcome one you love.
We cannot help the tears that fall-
our hearts need to time grieve
when earthly life has ended
and a loved one has to leave.
Yet even in the saddest time,
we know our Savior lives,
and we can trust completely
in the promise that He gives-
that in a glad reunion with the Lord
our loved ones wait to welcome us in the joy with no more tears beyond the gate.

In loving memory of "Cupcake"

My thoughts and prayers are with your entire family. My family lost a teenage boy last year at this same time. We have been traveling this path for a year now. I can tell you that the severity of your pain does get a little better. There is not a day goes by, that we don't think of our angel Joshua. Get comfort from your memories and your family and faith. Scott would want you to smile again someday. He will not be forgotten. I am saying a special prayer for you, Janet, as you walk this path of grief.
