Shawn Lasswell Obituary

A 21-year-old soldier formerly from Cottage Hills died Sunday while serving in Iraq, according to family members.

Army Cpl. Shawn Thomas Lasswell Jr. was killed in a roadside bombing northwest of Baghdad.

Lasswell grew up in Cottage Hills. He moved to Las Vegas with his mother, Cathy Zehren, when he was about 10 or 11, said his stepmother Kim Lasswell of Cottage Hills.

She remembered him as the blonde-haired, blue-eyed boy whom she first met when he was 5.

Kim and Shawn Lasswell Sr. kept in touch Shawn Lasswell Jr. via telephone most of the next decade.

She said her stepson visited the area in June before leaving for Iraq shortly before Christmas. She said he had grown into a handsome, broad-shouldered young man, standing taller than 6 feet.

"It was great seeing him again," Kim Lasswell said. "He was all grown and completely different. He was a big boy."

Kim Lasswell said her stepson enjoyed playing with remote-control cars, playing the guitar and hanging out with his friends.

"He knew his job. He knew what he was doing," she said. "He talked to anybody and everybody, a real friendly boy."

Two other U.S. soldiers died Sunday in the attack.

In addition to his parents, Shawn Lasswell Jr. is survived by five siblings.

Funeral arrangements were undetermined Tuesday but will be held at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton. For more information, visit finefuneralhomes.com on the Internet.

Shawn was a good guy, I hung out with him often in Texas, I remember when he got a tattoo on his left forearm of a skull. We rode around Fort Hood Texas in his jeep. My name is Devin, he knew me as SPC Demuth. I was in Charlie Troop for a while until they transferred me to Alpha troop.

Follow The Rainbow To Heaven.
=======================================

A Soldier had die out on the
battlefield;

Broken hearts are weeping For
Them,

But take comfort of knowing
that God had sent Them a
rainbow from heaven;

The Souls of the Soldiers
have gone to there home
in heaven,

Our Loved One's has follow
God's lovely rainbow in the
sky;

All the way to the end of the
sky.

That leads all the way to the
other end of the Lord's
house in heaven,

So just keep on praying and
trust that God will send us
that same rainbow in the sky;

Where Our Loved One's are
waiting For You and For Me at
the end of the rainbow in
heaven.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Shawn, but I am remembering on
this day he gave his all.
He is my hero.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

I was Shawn's 8th grade Algebra teacher at Fremont Middle School in Las Vegas, Nevada. Shawn, and his brother Kevin, were the sweetest, funniest kids ever! They kept in touch for a long time and remained friends with my niece and her friends. Both great guys who grew up, and up, and up... The news of Shawn's passing was beyond sad. It was horrifying and shocking. I was told that he couldn't wait to get home, get out of the military and perhaps open a business. He should not be gone. I will never forget him. I send my deepest and warmest regards to his mother and Kevin, as well as the rest of his family.

I want to thank Shawn for protecting us all! He was a student of mine at Sierra Nevada Job Corps Center and he will be missed! We are all very proud of Shawn! My sympathy goes out to his family! I heard about another student of mine who also was killed in Iraq today and my heart is so hurt from all this! If people could see what I see... kids come to our center with doubts of what they can accomplish and dreams they are unsure if they can reach. I get to see them and help them and then graduate them! WOW! Thats why I am a teacher! They also teach me so much! They are determined, brave and strong! Once they reach the little goals they want so much more and reach so much more! I am a proud teacher at Sierra Cevada Job Corps center! Will always be proud of Shawn T. Lasswell, Jr.

My condolences to the Lasswell family and may God bless them and stand by them. He has given the greatest sacrifice for his country, his life. He was willing to do so without question for others in a foreign land and to preserve the freedoms that all take for granted in this country. His mission is completed. It is now our turn to step up and begin our mission for him.

Today it was my great privilege to participate as a Patriot Guard Rider and American Legion Rider in the funeral for CPL Lasswell in Alton, IL. We gathered to pay final tribute and honor this fallen hero and his wonderful family. May Shawn be in Gods hands and may God always watch over his family.

To the Family of Cpl. Shawn T. Lasswell:

My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05.

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort. When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.

To Shawn's family and friends,

I want to send my prayers and condolences to you. I'm just a mom in Las Vegas. My son Adam was with the 1st Infantry Division and served 15 months in Iraq, Bayji and downtown Balad. During that time I will never forget the fear and worries you go through and even though my own son has since come home I still feel much of that fear and worry in my heart for all the rest still serving. I am so sorry. Please know there are many of us praying for you. Shawn will not be forgotten.You are in my prayers.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

While Shawn was at my daughter's home in Las Vegas, Nevada, I just happened to be online. Shawn was in the back ground, and I could see him through the camera. He was playing around. He had such a wonderful heart. I met Shawn a few times, when he was growing up, while I visited my daugher. Shawn was a brave soldier, and I will miss him dearly. My love and sympathy goes out to his mom Kathy, and his family.

Shawn was like a son to my husband Brian and myself "Luwana". Shawn just visited us before returning to Iraq on April 14th. He was is such good spirits, and couldn't wait until he could return to the US permentantly in March of 2007. He was a wonderful young man that will be sadly missed by me, my husband, my son, his girlfriend, and his new friend Travis. We have known Shawn for 7 years. We have watched him grow from a boy to a man. My son and Shawn loved to Skateboard, and their favorite hobby as children where RC Cars. It was a shock just seeing him a few days ago, and now he is gone. He is now with Our Lord, and he will always be in our hearts, and he will never be forgotten.
