Alice Maurey Obituary

Alice Dee Maurey passed away peacefully in Bellingham on May 6, 2025, her 82nd birthday, after a long battle with cancer.

Born on May 6, 1943, Alice was the beloved daughter of Doreanne Campbell Lenon and Arthur E. Lenon. Alice earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and French Education from Purdue University in 1965.

Alice embraced change, moving across borders and adapting to various roles. After spending several years in Toronto, Canada, she returned to West Lafayette, Indiana, where she lived for two decades before settling in Bellingham.

Early in her career, Alice taught Spanish and French in Indiana. She later served as a claims adjudicator for Indiana State Employment Security for 15 years, and went on to work in the Purdue University Development Office. In Bellingham, she followed her entrepreneurial passion by opening Hollyhocks Clothing & Collectibles in Fairhaven in 1995.

Alice was an active member in her communities, including the Ladies of the Evening Society and the Women's Professional Network in Bellingham, and Friends of Fiddlers' and the Tippecanoe County Historical Association in Indiana.

She was a woman of many talents and interests: an accomplished home chef, a skilled seamstress, an avid knitter, and a lover of jigsaw puzzles. She cherished the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, often enjoying mountainside picnics. Above all, Alice adored cats and shared her life with many feline companions over the years.

Alice is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Russell Maurey of Bellingham; her daughter, Brandylyn Lemen (née Geofroy) of Durham, North Carolina; stepdaughter, Sherry Geofroy of Auch, France; and two stepsons, Russell and Michael Maurey of Kentucky and Virginia. She also leaves behind three cherished grandchildren in Durham, six step-grandchildren in France, Virginia, and Kentucky, and one great-grandchild.

Her legacy of kindness, intelligence, and creativity lives on in those who knew and loved her.

Services will be held later this month in Indiana.

In honor of Alice's lifelong love of cats, donations may be made in her memory to Safe Haven for Cats at safehavenforcats.org.

Alice was the first friend I made when I moved here 20 years ago. She always made me laugh, even when I was out of work and scared, even when I was rehabbing from horrific injuries. She was a true friend, there for the bad times as well as the good.
