Carl Read Obituary

Carl "Bill" Read, age 74, of Coupeville passed away on Christmas Day. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and "Santa" to many. He was born October 25, 1944 in Bellingham, WA to Milton and Ruby Read. Bill grew up in Bellingham where he met his high school sweetheart Cheryl, and soon married in August of 1965. Bill loved music, cooking, travel, and most of all, his family. For 33 years he was a machinist/millwright at Intalco in Ferndale, WA. In his retirement years he found great joy in cooking and entertaining family and friends at his beach home in Coupeville, WA. Bill was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and enjoyed singing in the choir and cooking men's breakfast. Bill loved growing out his gray beard and dressing up as Santa and visiting nursing homes, preschools, and the Safeway in Oak Harbor, bringing joy to children and encouraging food donations for the needy. It is only fitting that "Santa" passed away on Christmas Day. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and Cheryl, his wife of 46 years, in 2012. He is survived by his children Michael and Lynn Read of Seattle, Robert and Christina Read of Lynden, and Ryan and Christine Wasserman of Bellingham. He has five grandchildren, Nevan Read, Natalia & Johanna Read, and Benjamin & Zoe Wasserman. Bill is also survived by his sister Betty (Jack) VanderHoek of Bow, WA. A celebration of life service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 18341 Washington 525, Freeland, WA 98249 on Saturday, January 12th at 1:00 pm. Memorials may be made to honor Bill by supporting your local food bank or to the memorial fund at Trinity Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 97, Freeland, WA 98249. I met Bill when we were sophomores at Bellingham High School. We were in the band and the band met before the school year to practice for and march in the PNE Parade in Vancouver. This was a big deal for us incoming students. While I did not know him well at first, I took more notice of him when he started dating Cheryl Clark. I met Cheryl in Kindergarten and we were in many classes together in elementary, junior high, and high school. She was one of the nicest and smartest girls in our class. I began to wonder about her wisdom when she started dating Bill. After all, he had gone to a different junior high, and to top it off, he was a drummer! It did not take long to realize they were made for each other. I appreciated his friendship and leadership of the percussion section in many parades and concerts. I was honored to serve as one of Bill's groomsmen for their wedding. While my wife and I were gone for more then 26 years in the Air Force, we always tried to get together when we came home on leave. When we met and talked in later years he was always ready to brag on their kids. Our last meeting with them was as part of the Bellingham High School Alumni Band. They were both special friends and we miss them.

So sorry to lean of Bill's passing. I am so sorry we don't keep in closer contact with family. We did visit Bill after he moved to Coupeville.
Our thoughts are with his family.

The first dance band that I had around 1960 was called the Jesters. Bill read played drums, and Cheryl Clark played flute. They were both good musicians and super nice people. My condolences to their family members.

To Bill's dear family, when my youngest daughter attended the celebration of life for her grandpa the five year old said, "my outside can't say what my inside is feeling." Guess that best describes me as I share my words with you. Gone too early! I had hoped to learn so much more from Bill's wisdom and experiences. A thoughtful, generous person. A strong man. A loving spouse & father! He was genuine ... a rare individual that this world still needs. A kind friend that I will sorely miss!

As I mentioned to Lynn, I had hoped to attend Bill's celebration of a life well lived but I had previously committed to another funeral that is at the same time. Let's get together soon to raise a glass in memory of Bill. He'd like that.

Love, Linda
