October 12, 1943 - May 11, 2025
Bellingham, Washington - Gene Hewitson, age 81, passed away peacefully at Whatcom Hospice House on Sunday, May 11, 2025. He was born in London, England on October 12, 1943. The family moved to Washington when he was three years old and he was raised in Bellingham. A proud veteran, Gene served in the US Navy. He worked for many years at Liberty Equipment and Supply in Bellingham.
Gene was a kind man and loved helping others. As a member of Sacred Heart, he was an active volunteer with Hope House, Knights of Columbus, and St. Vincent de Paul. He also volunteered at the Bellingham Blood Bank.
Gene was preceded in death by his first wife, Thea Hewitson, and Mary Ellen's son, Jon Hasenoehrl.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Hewitson; sons, Scott (Jodi) Hewitson and John (Lisa) Hewitson; daughter, Shannon (Paul) Winkler; sister, Denise Perigo (companion Doug Martinson); Mary Ellen's sons, Steven (Stacie) Hasenoehrl and Jim (Laura) Hasenoehrl; and many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, (1110 14th St.) in Bellingham at 11:00AM on Thursday, May 22 followed by a graveside committal at Bayview Cemetery.

Larry and I met Mary Ellen at Sacred Heart Church and through the Knights of Columbus, where we all attended. They were a lovely couple that we immediately knew we could be friends with. We often sat together at KC dinners. Gene was a kind sweet man. We will miss him. May Gene rest in heavenly peace.

Gene was a dear friend of my brother, Nick. I got to know him through his many visits to our home on Ellis St. He had a wonderful sense of humor, was patient and kind to me and I will miss him. I pray his family will receive comfort and closure. Know that your loss is shared by others and cherish the happy memories we all have of Gene.

I was so sorry to hear about Gene's death. I have found memories of Gene from my high-school years with John. As a parent of new high-schoolers, I can say he and Thea seemed to have the patience and forgiveness of saints.
