George Lamb Obituary

George S. Lamb of Seattle passed away on June 7, 2020. He was a long time professor at Western Washington University, where he taught elementary education with a focus on reading, supervised student teachers, and was a director of the Teacher Corps. He and his wife, Carol, were active in the First Congregational Church in Bellingham for many years; he served on the church board, and he especially loved singing in the choir. He was also a staunch supporter of democratic ideals and human rights. We knew him as a loving husband and father with a playful sense of humor, a kind smile, and twinkle in his eye. He was a good listener, always taking a special interest in the lives of his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Carol MacRae Lamb, his sister, Elizabeth Boyd, his three children Louise Frazier, Bruce Lamb, and Peter Lamb, and their spouses Douglas, Connie, and Tuyen; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren with another on the way, and many nieces and nephews by whom he will be much missed. Arrangements pending.

An unforgettable outstanding human! His robust and perceptive vision for our Teacher Corps program in 1970, one of only three such"rural" programs that year, targeted the needs of Native American school children in Western Washington. Aided by his colleague Helen Darrow and assistant manager Bill Orme, he worked with five tribal governments and five school districts to meet their needs while simultaneously affording an experimental/alternative MEd to almost 30 students. Uncharted territory for those times. We were a diverse and strong-willed group. The "learning community" models of Evergreen and Huxley were just beginning that year and George was clearly on board. His integrity, out-of-the-box thinking, patient listening, and sense of humor allowed him to overcome multiple unique challenges posed by the students, the school districts, the tribes, and the university itself. He was undaunted in gently asking anyone who presumed to be in authority to question his/her perspective and assumptions, and including himself... in order to deliver effectively on any endeavor. An unpresuming, gentle, upbeat, freethinker...

Years later I visited him in his grade one classroom where he was still making sure he could walk his talk. "I'm glad you came - now will you please help me find the snake that got loose. Some will be upset to know I have it, especially if I can't find it..."

Blessings to Carol, Louise and the family.

Dear George, you were one of those shining lights of a human whose enduring warmth will continue to brighten our world long after your passing. Your sweet smile and encouraging presence in a classroom of little learners and aspiring teachers was a gift to the universe... a calming and loving force that will be missed. I felt privileged to have known you. My love to you always, sir.

George, you were a dear friend to my father-in-law, Stewart Van Wingerden and a welcome light and visitor in the Viking Union at Western! You used to come in to make reservations and we all loved seeing you! You always took the opportunity to say hello to me. You are a beautiful, generous soul and we wish you lasting peace, joy, and love.

Thank you for the support and encouragement you gave me during my student-teaching at Harmony Elementary. You always listened and at the same time knew what concerns we student-teachers had..I knew you for those short three months, but you were always close at mind.
