Jacqueline Zervas Obituary

Jacqueline Marcelle Zervas, born January 31, 1931, passed away this February 26. Jacqueline was born to Marcelle and Gabriel Aubriet. She was the fourth of five children, who included her older brother, Pierre, and sisters Yvette and Frédérique; and her younger brother, Jean-Claude. Jacqueline was born in Nonant le Pin, a small town in Normandie, France. After surviving the horrifying war years there, Jacqueline, her mother, and brothers and sisters moved away, and Jacqueline prepared to go to medical school. She soon changed her mind and instead took a job as a graphic designer—she had, from the time she was a child, always been a brilliant visual artist (and musician)—at the Évreux-Fauville Air Base, which was operated by the United States Air Force in connection with the stirrings of the cold war. In 1956, Jacqueline moved with her American husband whom she had met at the base, and her first child, Fabienne, to the United States. They came to Bellingham to attend what was then the New Whatcom State Normal School to obtain teaching degrees. In the meantime, she bore two more daughters, Dawn and Dominique. After Jacqueline and her husband divorced, she and her three daughters moved to a beautiful, magical, handmade cedar home in the country, surrounded by fields and forest; during this time, she taught French at Mount Baker High School. In 1961, George Bartholick introduced fellow architect, Jim Zervas, to Jacqueline and her three young daughters. Jim and Jacqueline were married in 1961, and Jim joined the little family in their grand cedar castle. Soon after, two boys, Claude and Christopher, joined the growing family. During Jim and Jacqueline’s 49-year stay at the magical cedar castle, it was a home filled with music, magic acts, painting, reading, sewing, knitting, and all kinds of play. Although Jacqueline taught French at Western Washington University as a profession, and stopped moments short of completing a doctorate in linguistics, she was always an artist at heart—whether in teaching, at life, or in dance, music, textiles, watercolor, pastels, pencil, and even crayon. She danced Flamenco at Theo and Isabelle Morca’s studio and studied and performed belly dancing. She practiced yoga and tai chi, and meditated, every day. Jacqueline was fascinated by nature, languages, cultures, and people from other countries, and loved the sun—these fascinations took her to Mexico, Turkey, Israel, Morocco, Italy, Spain and other sun-filled countries. She lived with the people in those countries and learned their languages and cultures, becoming conversant in some of the most challenging ones. Jacqueline maintained her French citizenship with intentionality and returned there often—sometimes with Jim and sometimes on her own—whether to Paris, Corsica, or their little, sometimes-home on the Mediterranean where together they took walks and swam every day. Jacqueline’s life was filled with adventure, and she always returned to the cedar castle, Jim, and their children. Her children, Vincent Vinh-Hung, Fabienne, Dawn, Dominique, Claude, and Christopher; her grandchildren, Arianna, Stefano, Didier, Pascal, Nicolo and Yvette; and great-grandchildren, Mattia, Nico, and Madison, will all miss her. Jacqueline’s passing was simple and tender; she slipped away after rinsing her mouth with Champagne, and while the beautiful letters poet Rainer Marie Rilke wrote to a young poet in the early 1900’s were read to her. Many and deep thanks to all the fine people who provided Jacqueline with loving and attentive care, including her private caregivers and those from Whatcom Hospice Services. A memorial event will be held at a later time.

I remember thinking growing up that the Zervas clan was a larger than life, too-glamorous-for-Bellingham version of our own Keep family. World travelers and dual citizens, with 40 acres and a magical hewn cedar house, a visit always had remodeling and art projects underway.
I helped around the property a bit in the 1990's, I remember visiting once on a dry summer day to help Jacqueline unroll all of her wool rugs on the lawn. She had stories of where they all came from at what the patterns went, she was so enthusiastic and present, she would look you in the eyes and say "oh, that is so fantastic!"

I always loved when your mother visited the office. I thought of her often after Dominique and I lost touch. She truly was a beautiful and magical woman.

I am so sorry to hear of Jacqueline’s passing and I give my deep condolences to her family.
Jacqueline was truly a fascinating woman and I am fortunate to have met her and visit with her, if only for such a brief time.
She lived at the same place that my late father lived and we often had dinner together always with delightful conversation.
One evening during dinner I recalled that remarkably I had actually met her about 15 years earlier at Rakassah, a belly dancing convention held in Richmond, CA where I was a musician and she was a vendor selling fabric, and my late wife who was a costumer had bought some of her wares.
She had such wonderfully eclectic and artistic interests and was a shining spirit. She will indeed be missed.

I first met Jacqueline back in 1969 when I ate my very first vegetarian meal at their cedar lodge on Kelly Road. I later saw Dick Gregory speak at Western with her daughter Fabienne, who shares the same B-day as me on Mach 20. I'll never forget this beautiful, spiritual French lady who wore a poncho while parading around Fairhaven. I was twenty years old when we met and am now almost seventy-two. Thanks to her influence, I've been a vegetarian fifty years now! I have never forgotten her my whole long life! I so wish I could find Fabienne somehow, as I wrote about her in my inspirational memoir, "Still Singing, Somehow".

I had the greatest pleasure of meeting her at solstice, she always made my day for I enjoyed her stories and I most certainly loved her beautiful sweaters she shared with me that she knitted. We seemed to share the same things like little collections of coins purses, she was so fun to visit. She was excited when she learned we shared the same birth month and same beginning last name letter Z. I am so happy to have met her and she will be a good memory in my heart. Thank you to the family for sharing her. My prayers are for you all.

Billie Berton. Jacqueline was the person who pointed us toward the acreage for sale across Kelly Road from their amazing 100 year old homestead. We were looking for a place to start a commune - 1969.. The commune was a flop, but the friendship with the Zervas's clan was a total wonder. My vision of Jacqueline is this: wild beauty, gypsy dancer, tranquil flower, adventuresome lassie, open heart and mind, and wisdom - seeing and keeping that which is most important in this world. Tiny brown feet moving across the grasses - reclining rest in the sun - creative outpouring in a multitude of mediums - deep laughter - sparkle - warmth - inclusiveness and love always. She helped us through the droughts Her waters overflowed our containers when our well was dry - her electric energy overflowed our hearts when our spirits were dry. She was a wonderful friend and I will never forget her or stop loving her. I send my love to all of her children and family and friends. She is not gone - just look for her in nature - that's where she has always lived.

I recall Misses Zervas very fondly as a fun and entertaining lady. I attended school with her youngest son Chis. I recall the cool old house atop the Kelly Road and thought it something out of a story book. I also remember riding in her VW van with the boys listening to her speak in French. I thought that was so cool. Sorry to hear of her passing, a life well lived indeed. My thoughts to the family.

I remember the Zervas children as they entered Harmony Elementary as they lived on the Kelley Road. When you met and talked to Jacqueline it was always a special conversation and experience-a wonderful Lady. I had the pleasure of getting to know the boys; and having Chris in my sixth grade class. It was special to know the Zervas family.
