Louise Hecht Obituary

Louise Hecht, age 95 of Bellingham, passed away May 29, 2009. She was born December 24, 1913 to Axel Bulow and Margie McIvor Bulow in Victoria, B.C. She moved to Bellingham in 1920, graduated from Fairhaven High School in 1932, and from St. Joseph School of Nursing in 1936. In 1937, she married Dr. Morris Hecht and together they ran a family practice in Chicago and later in Bellingham. Louise was Noble Prophetess of the White Shrine of Jerusalem and was Past-President of the Women's Auxiliary of the Whatcom County and Washington State Medical Societies. She was instrumental in bringing outpatient mental health care to Whatcom County. Louise was a proud member of Sister Xavier Nurses Auxiliary, Hadassah, and Beth Israel Synagogue. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Don Cole; her husband, Dr. Morris Hecht; and her dear daughter, Blythe Cole Busch. Louise is survived by son and daughter-in-law Dr. Emil & Tannia Hecht; grandchildren and their families, Megan Cole, Sara, Phil, Savannah & Chloe Balston, Mia, Todd & Josie Ellis, and Avram Hecht; as well as numerous beloved caretakers, cousins, friends, and loved ones. Louise was "Nana" to many generations, and a collector of people's hearts and stories. She always had an open door, a warm meal, a funny joke, and the time to talk. Throughout her life, up through her 95th year, she loved gathering people together in celebration. She was compassionate, kind, and unconditionally loving to all she knew. We can each honor Louise by follow her example of being accepting and loving to everyone we meet. Funeral Services will be held at Westford Funeral Home on Sunday, May 31 at 2 PM followed by burial at Beth Israel Cemetery. A Reception will follow at Westford's Broadway Hall, 1300 Broadway. Memorials may be made to Congregation Beth Israel-Building Fund, 2200 Broadway, Bellingham, WA 98225, or to the Blythe Cole Busch Fund for Literacy Development, c/o Whatcom Community Foundation, 119 Grand Ave. Suite A., Bellingham, WA 98225. I remember my late husband, John Miller, telling me that after doing an appraisal of her home, Louise would not let him leave without a jar of Strawberry jam. He could not remember ever coming home with a gift before. So sorry for your loss.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Mrs. Hecht was a close friend of my mother, Delcia Berry (Williams)Robinson. I heard many stories of what a wonderful person Mrs. Hecht was, and I am proud to be named for her. Mrs. Robinson passed in 1991, and I am certain they are in Heaven having a grand reunion! God bless you all with His peace.

She was my first Cub/Boy Scout master in the late 1940's-50. I believe on 16th street. Vivid memory of cutting my finger while carving soap under her directions. Malcolm Haner then 920 17th.
