Paul Sires Obituary

Paul M. Sires passed away on May 29, 2017 surrounded by his beloved family. Paul was born on October 24, 1941 in Bellingham, WA to Melvin and Nanna (Otteson) Sires. Paul graduated from Meridian High School in 1959 and immediately after, joined the Navy. In 1963 he married the love of his life, Patricia Sires. Paul and Patricia lived in Hawaii where he was stationed in Pearl Harbor aboard the USS Greenlet. They returned to Washington in 1966 where he started working for Intalco. In 1971 Paul enlisted in the Army National Guard. He switched over to the Drill Sargeant Unit and finished his military career in 2001 and also retired from Intalco the same year. Paul loved his country and was proud to have served it. Paul had many musical talents and enjoyed performing for his family who he adored the most. He was proud of his children and grandchildren and loved bragging about them all and it was very rare not to see him watching them at any of their events. He was valued and cherished in the community from teaching and coach and being a friend to all. He is predeceased by his parents Melvin and Nanna Sires, brother Frank Sires, brother-in-law Bob Weatherby and son-in-law Hank Sundseth. Paul is survived by his wife of 54 years years, Patricia Lynn (Simpson) Sires, children Jody Sundseth, Mark (Jennifer) Sires, James (Debbie) Sires, William (Wendy) Sires and Laura (Scott) Mellema, 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Paul and I played baritone horns together in the Meridian High School band, which brings back many fond memories. I always looked forward to reunions where we could touch base and catch up. We were friends on Facebook. I didn't realize that he was ill.

Paul was part of history to Washington veterans. He was instrumental when I asked him to be part of the color guard in front of Washington wagon train that started in Blaine. I asked Intalco president Ferry to send us to philadelphia to end the wagon train, of course Paul was one of the five that lead our wagon. It was a pleasure an honor as a willing veteran to have him in the color guard

Words that define "The Quiet Man"
Everyone has a story to contribute about Paul because he was simply so many things to each of us the many defining words of husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. However, the better appropriate titles are the piano player, the entertainer, the storyteller, the coach, the math teacher, the electrician, the beer buddy, the hugger, and finally the best natural role that defined him The Santa Clause.
His love story with his wife, Mrs. Clause requires equal attention. The two of them made it look easy which I know all marriages have moments. An iconic image to remember is the two of them driving in the truck; Grandma always drove and Grandpa always in the passenger seat with his head slightly tilted to the left. Always together and always supporting one another.
The next word is FAMILY. Photo after photo are of Grandpa watching his grandkids at endless games of fast pitch, volleyball, soccer, football, basketball, baseball, swimming, and track-n-field; as well as, attendance of seasonal band and choir concerts and stage drama musical performances. He was first person to tell congratulate him/her on a job well done.
We are all feeling the absence of The Quiet Man sitting in the TV room whose presence promised a calm atmosphere. Now of course the man had gift of taking a nap in an instant, but he was only resting his eyes.
It was an honor to know him and him to know you. I will be bold to say that we all selfishly wish he was still here teasing Grandma as she frequently got a name wrong of an athlete on TV, leaving a trail of snack crumbs behind him, catching his quiet dry quick witted jokes that where only for the ones paying attention, or him sneaking food to any dog at his knee.
My personal favorite word is Spencer Tracy. He always reminded of Spencer Tracy's style of humor and cadence of his voice. Paul did not brag or offer advice, but if he did say something, you were a fool not to listen. Therefore, I dare you to watch the movie The Desk Set with Spencer's love Katherine Hepburn and not see the resemblance of him.
Finally, may all his grandchildren live up to his dynamic life attributes of loving, hugging, staying calm, being true, never giving up, working hard, being kind, and loving God and country.
