Robert Broberg Obituary

Robert C. Broberg was born in Chicago to Gideon and Hazel. He graduated from Northwestern University. He joined the Marine Corps and attained the rank of Captain serving in the South Pacific during WWII, eventually being assigned to New Zealand where he met the love of his life Nancy. After the war he and Nancy settled in Chicago and began raising their four children, while Bob worked in the stockyards with his father, buying and selling livestock. In the early 1960s Bob left Chicago and moved west. He had a cattle and sheep ranch in Oregon for a time before re locating to Carmel, California where he had a small business before retiring for good. The rest of his life he lived off his investments and real estate dealings. In the late 1960's he put his stuff in storage and took his youngest son and wife to Europe where he bought a 41 foot ocean racing sloop and sailed it with his wife and son and various minions to the Pacific side of the Panama Canal. After a brief stay in Hawaii he brought his family to the San Juan Islands where he lived on a remote island. He then spent several years in the desert in California, helping his daughter Jan through nursing school. In the ensuing years he lived in various scenic locales including homes on Whidbey Island, Bow WA, Hawaii and Birch Bay. After his beloved Nancy passed away in 2003 he lived with his dog on a sailboat in Blaine, when not moving about the country in various motor homes and camper vans. He eventually moved ashore and spent several years at the Leopold Hotel, and was happy to spend his last years at Alderwood Park Convalescent Center, where he was much loved for his sunny disposition and salty spontaneity. Bob was a generous and fair man who had an inquisitive mind. Young people were always attracted to his free spirit and he supported and mentored many throughout his life. He deeply loved his wife, was devoted to his family, and will be greatly missed. Preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jack, his wife Nancy and his daughter Janice, he is survived by his son Bryan(Julie); son Chris(Karen); daughter Lindsay; grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff at APCC. There will be a Memorial Service Sunday February 10th at 2:30 at The Center For Spiritual Living, 2224 Yew Street Road.

I enjoyed talking with Mr. Broberg while I worked at APCC. He always had a smile on his face when I saw him. He will be greatly missed. But memories of him will go on forever. This world was blessed to have such a great man in it.

God rest your fine old soul, Bob. You always said that you and I were so lucky to have lived so long and beaten so many odds. I'll see you again at our final duty station. Until then, Semper Fidelis, my dear friend!
