Robert Tan Obituary

Robert Tan
October 5, 1943 - March 13, 2023
New York, New York - Robert Tan passed away on March 13, 2023, in New York City after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Claudia (Mazur) Tan, Julianne Mazur (sister-in-law), Ruby (Carino) Tan (sister), Joseph Tan (brother), 15 nieces and nephews, predeceased by Joseph Tan (father), Corazon (Lopez) Tan (mother), Mario Tan, Emmanuel Tan, Thomas Tan (brothers), Paul Mazur (brother-in-law).
A Catholic Mass was held on March 19, 2023, in Forest Hills, NY, at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs for Robert by Father Frank Passenant, a close family friend. Friends and relatives attended the celebration; it was the feast of St. Joseph.
Born in Manila in 1943, Robert graduated from San Beda University (BS in business) and attended New York University in NYC. He was president of his firm, an estate manager, and a financial consultant, which entailed international travel. He met his wife, Claudia, in Paris, France, in 1977. A civil marriage was held in Baguio at Camp John Hay on October 5, 1980. When they returned to the States, a wedding was held at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs on July 5, 1981.
San Francisco was their home in the 1980s before settling in Forest Hills. His wife worked in the aviation industry for Trans World Airlines and was based out of JFK airport.
Mr. Tan and Claudia, with many volunteers (from New York, Los Angeles, and Manila), ran a charity in Caloocan, Philippines, Lady of Lujan Orphanage, for ten years. The orphans had an elaborate Christmas dinner party with Santa Claus, elves, and gifts each year. An outing was scheduled at the Enchanted Kingdom, a local amusement park.
Robert's father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Lorrie Mazur (deceased), lived in Bellingham, WA, after being transferred from Mobil in Buffalo, NY, when the refinery closed in 1981. Robert visited for holidays and vacations. His family thought Bellingham was charming and peaceful and was chosen as the family burial site. On April 27, 2023, a memorial service and burial will be held at Bayview Cemetery.
Robert was a loving husband and an accomplished chess player who enjoyed sailing and making friends worldwide.
Donations in Robert's memory may be given to a local orphanage.

Robert was a kind, loving man who enjoyed life with a smile always on his face. He made the world a better place by just being in it. May his dear wife Claudia´s heart be comforted knowing how much this man was loved and admired.
