Sean Ovens Obituary

Sean Kelly Charles Ovens
March 28, 1976 - July 27, 2022
Tacoma, Washington - The planet got quieter late July 27, 2022 when Sean Ovens' voice left us here to take up bellowing in the heavens. He was 46 years old.
Sean Kelly Charles Ovens was born March 28, 1976, the second baby and first boy born in the then brand new St. Mary's Hospital in Walla Walla, Washington. He was quiet and calm for approximately 6 months before making the determination that a quiet and placid life was not for him, and began airing his thoughts and grievances to the world which would continue in a steady narrative torrent for the rest of his life.
Sean would grow up in Bellingham, Washington graduating from Sehome High School in 1994. While in high school his love of physical activity and challenge led him to play rugby with the Samish Bay Steamers rugby club. He made lifelong friends along the way who would follow his adventures wherever they went.
After high school, Sean's pursuit of a heroic life led him to join the United States Army, and afterwards he found his true calling and second family with the Tacoma Police Department. He was commissioned in 2005 and served the next 17 years on patrol, 11 of those on the TPD SWAT team including being a well respected instructor at the Police Academy. Sean's law enforcement career and especially the close relationships formed on the blue line was a foundation of who he was. His service in the line of duty which often placed him in extreme danger, was recognized with numerous commendations and awards throughout his career, including receiving the Medal of Merit 4 times, and the Distinguished Service Medal last year.
Sean loved combat sports, watching mixed martial arts events, training in boxing and Jiu-Jitsu, and was a member at Grace Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Tacoma. He was a remarkable story teller and loved relaying the stories of his adventures. He also loved sharing his unique and hilarious views and observations on everything including airing his grievances, of which there were many, to his friends and family alike. He is loved and admired by the many families he formed over the course of his heroic life.
Sean is survived by his mother Bobbi Vollendorff (Roberta as he called her,) of Bellingham, WA, father Michael Ovens of Sammamish, WA, brothers Bryan (Misty), and Heath Ovens of Richland, WA, niece Frances Violet, half sisters Caitlin Charnley-Ovens and Kieran Charnley- Ovens of Walla Walla, WA, best bros Tony Moon, Rick Pemmant, and Rhys Lawson as well numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and family friends. He is also survived by his partners of many years Eric Scrips and Shane Wimbles as well as many brothers and sisters in arms with the Tacoma Police Department.
The family wishes any donations to be given to Behind the Badge Foundation.org, a local branch of NAMI, or the charity of the reader's choice in Sean's name.

Sean, I just got this dreaded news, you will be missed, there is no doubt dear friend. I remember working with you in the ER at St. Joes all those years ago, and when you got your interview with Tacoma PD, I went shopping with you for a suit, I bought your tie. Every time I hear that song, "Come on Eileen", I smile remembering that party when you and your buds formed a kick line, "Rockette Style" as you guys sang that song. My God you were so fun. I am beyond saddened that I´ll never again see that mischievous smile. Love you dear friend, rest easy in peace
