Susan Mancuso Obituary

Susan Karen Mancuso

September 6, 1948 - April 27, 2025

Bellingham, Washington - Susan, beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed from our midst on April 27, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer. She will be fondly remembered for having touched and affected the lives of many students and professional colleagues, as well as our family and friends.

Susan was born in Los Angeles, CA. and graduated from Morningside High School in Inglewood, CA., where she met Jim.

She was accepted to UCLA and graduated, then married Jim and they moved to Bellingham in Feb., 1971. She then was admitted to WWU and was accepted to their Masters program. Susan then found a career in higher education at Whatcom Community College and a new program. She then became Dean of Students. She continued her pursuit of education and acquired a PHD from the University of Washington in Higher Education. Susan then became a professor and chair at Western Washington University until her memory faltered and she retired.

After retirement she stayed very busy with the League of Women Voters and channeled her energy in many workshops for the league. Her favorite league saying was "Voting is not a spectator sport". She ended her time with the league with Alzheimer taking more of her capacity to function.

Susan loved many activities, such as cooking, gardening, traveling, reading, fishing, and especially hanging out with family and friends.

Jim cared for Susan for five years and admitted her to Silverado Care Center on June 29, 2023. Susan was loved by all staff members, she almost always happy and could shimmy her shoulders in the hallways making everyone happy. Jim was forever grateful that Susan was always happy to see him and grateful that she remembered her family members right to the end.

Jim has the highest regard for everyone at Silverado Care Center. The staff consistently showed love, kindness, professionalism, and always knew that to do in every situation. Whatcom Hospice was called when the end was near and their kindness will always be remembered by Jim and family.

One of Susan's favorite stories is about fishing one day with Jim, off the coast of Vancouver Island, surrounded by charter boats, she got a salmon bite, she stood in the center of the rocking boat and set the hook like a pro. We landed the fish and when she sat down and said, "you know why I wear this pink coat?", and I said "no", she said "I want to show all these men that a woman can fish as well as them"; sounds like her.

Susan leaves behind her daughter Jennifer Morrow, grandchildren Yale and Ella Morrow, sisters Barbara Rognlen, Connie Harsell, Peggy Ellertson, and husband Jim.

I am saddened to hear of Dr. Mancuso's passing. Like so many, she taught me the meaning of professionalism and grace as my professor in the SAA program. She was tough, but she also cared deeply for her students, and the world in general. It's an honor and a privilege to carry her knowledge forward. May she rest in peace.

My condolences to Susan's family. I had the privilege and pleasure of taking classes from Dr. Mancuso in the M.Ed program at Western Washington University. She had high standards for herself and others. In other words, Susan was a tough grader! But also fair and inspired us to go the extra mile. Students were challenged to not only understand the varying roles of institutions within higher education, but to operationalize them. She was also actively involved in higher education at the county and state level and served as a knowledgeable and generous resource for so many practitioners, students and others. Thank you for sharing the story about her setting the hook while salmon fishing. That so sounds like her!

Susan was a treasured colleague, both when she was an administrator at Whatcom Community College, and later when she headed the SAA program at WWU which was so successful. She helped me understand how to help WCC students take in what Fairhaven College might have to offer them, and through her, I learned a lot about listening to students in new ways. I had the honor being one those whom Susan asked to read and comment on a draft of her Ph.D. thesis. I was delighted with this chance to get to know her better as a scholar and teacher. I know she was dearly missed on campus and around the state when she retired. She radiated a teacherly patience coupled with a focused determination to move forward, a deeply empowering combination that was rare and profoundly energizing for students, colleagues and friends.

Jim and Jennifer,

I was deeply saddened to hear of Susan´s passing. I had the great fortune of being her student twice-first as a Human Services undergrad and later as an SPA graduate student. Susan was the educator I needed at pivotal points in my academic journey. I remain deeply grateful for her mentorship and the role she played in my personal and professional growth. My deepest condolences to you and your family.

I knew Susan as both a community college and WWU colleague. She was an amazing educator and a leader by example. Her WWU program had a huge impact on community college administration around the state and nation. Most of all she was delightful person who I was fortunate to know.

I am lifting Susan's family in care and prayer. She was one of my favorite graduate school professors (I especially appreciated her course on community colleges) and I was blessed to overlap her briefly on the League of Women Voter's Board. She was smart, acerbic, insightful and a deep thinker. I am so grateful for the even the small world I travelled in her orbit.

Jim and Jennifer, I am deeply saddened to learn of Susan's passing. Susan, was absolutely my "most favorite" pilates client, Jim was second! As Susan told me many times, exercise was "not her thing" but she grew to become such a dedicated client when it came to her pilates routine. Susan will always leave a special "footprint in my heart" ~~
