Bellingham, Washington - Local Fairhaven legend Tom Oyen died peacefully at home in his sleep on September 17, 2021.
Tom was born April 24, 1953 to Harold and Ardelle Oyen in Mukilteo, Washington, where he spent his youth.
Tom was the longtime owner of the Chimney Sweep in Fairhaven, founded in 1979. he was originally a partner in the business, becoming sole owner in 1985. A voracious student of chimney factoids and hearth-related lore, and a veteran of every facet of the hearth products business from the chimney top down, Tom was the go-to guy whenever there was a problem nobody could solve. His expertise led the New York Times to seek his knowledge for a 2006 article. Tom closed the business in 2019 after 40 years of serving the Whatcom County and online community.
Tom adored his dogs who he brought to work to greet customers every day; Walter and Angus, and now Truman, who is still waiting for Tom to throw that ball.
A funny, irascible, whip-smart man, Tom was well-loved. He played harmonica, drank good wine, and cooked for his friends during "Monday Night Dinner" at his home for many years. His friends and family will miss him immeasurably.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife Virginia (Ginny) Oyen, oldest brother Steve Oyen, sisters Rebecca Oyen, and Julie Pearson, and his surrogate son, David Presley.
A celebration of Tom's life will be held Sunday, April 24, 2022, at the Squalicum Boathouse in Zuanich Point Park, Bellingham, WA. from noon to 4:00 pm.
