Thomas Scott Obituary

Thomas LaRoy Scott, 73, passed away peacefully at Hospice House, surrounded by loved ones, on December 9, 2025, in Bellingham, Washington.

Born on July 1, 1952, in Longview, Washington, Tom was the eldest son of Russell Thomas Scott and Beverly Jean Slater Scott. He grew up in Kelso and graduated from Kelso High School with the Class of 1970. He went on to earn his degree from Western Washington University in 1976, laying the foundation for his life and future endeavors.

Tom deeply loved his family. He shared 44 years of marriage with his wife, Phoebe, and was incredibly grateful for the life they built together and the love she gave him. Together, they raised two children: daughter Allison Dissly and son Ryan Scott. His family grew to include son-in-law Russell Dissly and daughter-in-law Delany McCauley. Tom found immense joy in being a grandfather to Jolene Dissly, Slater Scott, Zoey Scott, and Malcolm Dissly. He will truly live on through his children and grandchildren.

Over the years, Tom contributed his professional talents to several organizations, including North Cascades National Park, Bell Rainier Distributors, Pump Service and Supply, and as the 30-year owner of Hilander Pump and Well Service. In every role, he brought passion, integrity, and humor. His strong work ethic and genuine joy on the job earned him lifelong customers and friends throughout Whatcom County.

Tom was also a loving brother to Susan Spain (Wayne), Linda Olin (Doran), and Pamela Doehne (Kent). He held close the memory of his late brother, Bruce A. Scott. He was also a brother-in-law to Phoebe's sisters, Amy Biggs (Dan) and Jessica Alexander (Alex). Tom deeply cherished the relationships he built with the children and grandchildren of his siblings and took great pride in the accomplishments of the younger generations, especially as he saw his parents' legacies continue.

Tom left his family a legacy of strong work ethic, quirkiness, humor, music, and a love of cats. They will deeply miss his silly songs, dance moves, and favorite sayings, but plan to carry those traditions forward for generations to come. These small details represent the indelible passion Tom felt for his family, career, and life story.

His final weeks were filled with kind words, heartfelt letters, and an abundance of visitors as he pushed through his life's greatest challenge. Tom would not want people to feel sadness, but instead to work hard, find the best in life, and laugh often with those they love.

A celebration of life will be held in his memory July 18, 2026.

Tom had a definite "presence" no matter where he was or what was happening. We spent many hours on the road or in a ditch, but let the good times roll!! Our motto- Hans and Franz, we are here to "Pump You UP ". And we did. You will be missed my friend.

First met Tom while attending WWU. From early on almost every project we worked on or every event we attended, including 30+yrs of Husky games became what we gratefully referred to as "another Chapter". His indefatigable energy & banter were the common threads of the Book. Rocki, Me & our Family miss Tom greatly. Like D said, Cya´ in the next Chapter...

What can i say? Tom was fun and funny, shoot-from-the-hip, and kept so many people in his life for so long. That's a real and underrated talent that many people don't have; he built and sustained relationships. He loved his wife, my sister Phoebe, and we are grateful that they had each other for so long. They built a home together.

Tom was wild about the big crazy fireworks, loved his kids and grandkids and was involved in their lives and always had something he was working on. He will be missed by the many people who knew and loved him so well.

Can't resist posting this pic as it's the best way to show how we all felt when dealing with our father. Cracked up seeing it again. :-)

I meet Tom at Western Washington State College in 1972. We have been great friends ever since. We shared seats at Husky Football ball for thirty years. We also co-owned an ocean front condo together in Manzanillo Mexico. He loved to joke with our Mexican friends and practice his Spanglish. He had a great sense of humor and always laughed at his own jokes. He was his best fan and entertained people from Mexico to Canada. He would have everyone in stitches from the moment he woke until he went to bed. Rest well my dear friend. I will see you in the next chapter.

I first met Tom when he was a partner with Rob Krebbs. You knew when they were coming through the door. The volume went up, the bantering back and forth with me and who ever was standing there and jokes flew until they got their material and went out the door. I was a wholesale pump and water treatment contact for Tom with the last place of business to meet up was HD Fowler. I retired from there. He was one of the good guys.
