September 6, 1931 - January 9, 2021
Everson, Washington - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend. Gene went to be with our Lord and Saviour on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at the age of 89 with his family at his side.
Thornton was born September 6, 1931 in Salem, Oregon to parents Thornton and Leta (Idler). He is survived and lovingly remembered by his sister Meva Janeway, his bother-in-law Les Sturgeon, his son Tim Skinner, his daughter Pam Vander Griend and her husband Kent, 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Gene spent his final days in his home he built 45 years ago with his father. That was made possible by his niece, Evelyn Sturgeon who provided loving, in home care. The family would like to say thank you for her dedication to our Dad and to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
We miss Gene, but rejoice that his suffering is finished. Sorrow is but for this moment; being joined to his Lord is forever. We look forward to being reunited in Heaven.
A private family graveside service will be held in Nooksack Cemetery on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Goshen Community Church Mission services, 6459 Mission Rd, Everson, WA 98247.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Gillies Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

I worked with Thornton at the mill for a few years and he quickly became my friend, I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. Yes, he is now being comforted in the arms of Jesus. I would see Skinner from time to time at the coffee shop sometimes, or putting around in his little GMC would always bring back fond memories. I truly loved that man.
