Elizabeth LeMay Obituary

Elizabeth (Lisa) Ellen LeMay of Sandgate, VT passed away peacefully in the early hours of November 1, 2025 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, surrounded by family.

Lisa was born on an American military base in Heidelberg, Germany on July 12, 1963 to Edward and Silvia Dauenheimer. She grew up in Montclair and Glen Ridge, New Jersey and graduated with honors from Elizabethtown College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in occupational therapy. Lisa worked for many years at The Center for Nursing and Rehab at Hoosick Falls and in home health in Bennington and Manchester.

She met her husband, John, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (UU) of Bennington in 1986. They married on a beautiful summer day in July of 1988 at an outdoor ceremony in Sandgate.

Lisa was a devoted friend, mother, daughter, sister and wife. She was a great animal lover, especially of dogs, and a compassionate caregiver to her patients. Lisa found joy in hiking, camping, canoeing, cooking, knitting, skiing, traveling and gardening. People often described Lisa as a hero and someone who never spoke ill of anyone.

Her unexpected death was a result of lung failure, most likely caused by radiation treatment for Hodgkin's disease during her college years. She also battled breast cancer in 2022.

Lisa is survived by her husband, John, daughter, Emma, both parents and brother, David Dauenheimer and family, as well as her mother-in-law, Barbara Robertiello, brother-in-law, Randy Ross and family, and sister-in-law, Leslie LeMay and family. She was predeceased by her son, Adam LeMay.

There will be a celebration of her life at the UU Fellowship of Bennington, where Lisa was an integral member of the community. The date is to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Casting for Recovery.

Lisa and I met at Elizabethtown College, in 1981, and became good friends. She was the kindest person I have ever known. I will miss her every day!
