Lucy Cary Obituary

Lucy Roy Cary, 94, of Latham, NY, passed peacefully, in her home, surrounded by her children, on January 9, 2024, after a brief illness. Lucy was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Joseph Charles Cary, with whom she enjoyed gardening, reading and many years of travel.

Born April 13, 1929, in Bennington, VT, the daughter of the late Henri and Antoinette (Bilodeau) Roy. Lucy earned her teaching degree at Castleton Teacher's College in Castleton, VT and her Master's in Education at The College of St. Rose. Lucy taught elementary education in Vermont and New York; retiring from North Colonie Central Schools after 20 years. She maintained special friendships with her Blue Creek family throughout her retirement.

Lucy is survived by her four children, Kevin (Mary Ann) Cary, Andrea Tersigni, Kathleen (Barry, Sr.) Bashaw, and Lisa Ciancetta and eight grandchildren, Melissa (Chris) Warner, Kevin R. (Alicia) Cary, Joshua (Tasha) Tersigni, Nicholas Tersigni (Libby Matulis), Jennifer (Kevin) Krol, Barry (Rachel) Bashaw, Jr., Jaime (Ryan) Burns, and Lindsay (Kevin Loo) Ciancetta. Lucy treasured time with her grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Mary Ann Cary and Barry Bashaw, Sr., held a very special place in Lucy's life and were fondly referred to as Lucy's two additional children.

Lucy is also survived by her sister, Beatrice Bopp of Loudonville and was predeceased by her siblings Robert Roy, Marcien Roy, Paul Roy, Rene Roy, Mary Brissette, Theresa Gratton, and Alice Bostley.

Per Lucy's request, services were private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The Community Hospice, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205.

I had the pleasure of working with Lucy while principal of Blue Creek. She was a wonderful teacher! There are many young people who got a great start in school because they spent their first grade year with Mrs. Cary. The day always began sitting outside the classroom door on the heater while Lucy spoke quietly to them and prepared them for the day. How blessed they were to have her as their teacher!

We will always remember being so amazed by Lucy's energy! No matter the weather outside she'd be walking her little dog Spike. We sure will miss her in the neighborhood! Rest in Peace Lucy <3

Our deepest condolences to Kathleen and family. You're in our thoughts and prayers.
