Maurice Matteson Obituary

Maurice W. Matteson 1931 - 2012 BENNINGTON, VT Maurice W. Matteson, a resident of Route 7A in Arlington and formerly of Manchester Center, passed away Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. Maurice was born in Sunderland on March 7, 1931, son of Joseph and Mabel Atwood Matteson. He received his education in Sunderland and Arlington schools, graduating from Arlington High School. Maurice enlisted in the Army during the Korean Conflict, which included tours of duty in Japan, Korea, Germany and Fort Knox, Ky. As a teenager, Maurice worked at the Roaring Branch Camps in Sunderland. He later worked as a farmer and was a supervisor for Dairy Herds Improvement Association. He worked for Agway for many years, was a Kirby Vacuum Cleaner salesman and retired after working as the night auditor for the Equinox Hotel in Manchester. Maurice enjoyed hunting and fishing. He enjoyed watching a good western movie and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Metowee Valley Grange, Past Master of the Batenkill Grange and a member of the American Legion, Post 69, Arlington, Vt. Maurice is survived by his children, Theodore Matteson and his wife, Sherry, of Indian Harbor, FL, M. Jacob Matteson and his wife, Mickey, of Manatomoras, PA, Sandrya Matteson of Hoosick Falls, NY and Deborah Whitman and her husband, Robert, of Arlington; 18 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Shirley Decker, whom he married on Jan. 2, 1954. Mrs. Matteson died February 25, 2011. He was also predeceased by his son Steven Matteson, who died May 7, 2011. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Maurice will be held Saturday afternoon January 28, 2012 at 1pm at HANSON-WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME ARLINGTON CHAPEL. Interment will follow in the family lot in Ira Allen Cemetery in Sunderland. There are no visiting hours. If friends desire, memorial gifts in Maurice's name may be made to the Vermont Veterans Home Activities Fund, c/o Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home Arlington Chapel, P.O. My heart goes out to the kids, I remember Maurice, 'Shirley and the kids when they lived in Middletown, everyone was just great. He served his country well and now rest in the Ultimate Place, not made by mans hands.
