Gerald (Jerry) Matteson, 84, of
Troy, Michigan, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on March 1, 2026.
At his passing, He was surrounded by his family, who sang his favorite hymns, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art." Jerry battled Lewy body dementia for over three years with his wife, Barbara, at his side caring for him the entire time.
Jerry and Barb graduated from Madison High School and had their first date in April 1961. On March 16th they would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.
Jerry had a deep love for coaching high school basketball and treasured the many years he spent mentoring young athletes. He also found great joy in hunting and fishing with family and friends. Some of his favorite moments were quiet walks through the woods, where he marveled at God's creation and felt closest to his Creator.
Known for his gift of conversation, Jerry could talk with anyone and genuinely enjoyed connecting with people. He never missed an opportunity to share his faith in Jesus and the hope that anchored his life.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Barbara; his daughters, Kitty (Mark) Stinson, Kelly (Jeff) Kubik, and Krissy (Tim Clark) Morcom; 12 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews who were deeply and positively impacted by the time they spent with their Uncle Jerry.
In keeping with Jerry's wishes, no funeral service will be held. A private dinner for immediate family will take place to celebrate his life and the legacy of faith and love he leaves behind.
We will deeply miss Jerry's lively conversations around a campfire, his love of the outdoors, and his unwavering faith. While our hearts ache in his absence, we rejoice in the promise that we will one day be reunited for eternity.
Psalm 73:26 My health may fail and my spirit may grow weary, but God remains the strength of my heart; He is mine forever.
