Paul LaPorte Obituary

HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. -- Paul W. LaPorte, 68, died Saturday, March 20, 2004, at the Brower General Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Maria (Palomar) LaPorte, and they resided on Rogers Avenue in Hoosick Falls. Paul and Maria spent winters in Ft. Lauderdale and summers in Hoosick Falls and Lake St. Catherine.

Paul was born Aug. 3, 1935 in Troy, the son of the late Paul H. and Catherine (Millington) LaPorte. He was educated at St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls and Hudson Valley Community College in Troy. Paul served in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1962. While stationed in Spain he met his wife Maria and they were married in Madrid, Spain on May 5, 1962.

They returned to the United States in 1962 and Paul worked with his father in the family petroleum business, Millington & LaPorte. Paul was passionate about his business, building it up to pass on to his own children. He was also a member of the Cambridge Marching Band, the Fiesta Marching Band, the Hoosick Falls Community Band and the Starbusters.

He was a lifelong and dedicated member of the Hoosick Falls Lions Club, Elks Lodge No. 178 and the Derby Club. Paul loved boats and golfing, but mostly he loved his life, “How Sweet It Is.”

Survivors, other than his wife Maria, include two daughters, Catherine Luke and her husband Bill of White Creek, and Maria Paz and her husband Jeff Estes of White Creek; three sons, Pablo LaPorte and his wife Megan of Salem, Paco LaPorte of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and Michael LaPorte of Hoosick Falls; two sisters, Ann Ambs and Mary Hoffy, both of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Paul is also survived by nine grandchildren, Alexandra, William and Sydney Luke, Nicholas Sobolew, Paul Henry and Daniel LaPorte, Sophie and Olivia Estes and Matthew LaPorte.

A memorial mass to celebrate his life will be offered on Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Immaculate Conception Church on Main Street in Hoosick Falls. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar Funeral Home, on 43 Main St. in Hoosick Falls. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Salvation Army or the Gold Coast Hospice in Ft. Lauderdale through the funeral home.

I was deeply saddened by the news of Mr. LaPorte's death and my heart felt sympathy goes out to the entire Laporte family. My teenage years were spent with Paz and I practically lived at their house. I felt that I was part of the family and have many fond memories of Paul. He will be greatly missed.

Maria & Family,

Very sorry to hear about Paul. Paul was a most cheerful & outgoing person. I, also, remember him as an outgoing and good-humored student in high school at St. Mary's Academy. Our condolances,
