Alice Bowen Obituary

Alice G. Bowen 1915-2008 SOUTH EGREMONT Alice G. Bowen was surrounded by her loving family as she passed away peacefully and gracefully on May 31, 2008. Born on March 28, 1915 in Waterbury, Conn., to Matthew J. and Beatrice C. Dempsey, she lived her early years in South Egremont and attended the former Searles High School in Great Barrington before moving to West Springfield in 1940, where she spent most of her fun-filled life. As a young girl, Alice sang in several towns throughout Western Massachusetts, and as a young woman, brought enjoyment to many while playing the piano and singing. However, no performances were more special than the ones Alice gave for her family. She sang as she lived - gracefully as a swan, as beautiful as the sunrise, and as gentle as a summer breeze. She will be remembered, as people have described Alice: the most positive, caring, loving, and sweetest woman who ever lived. Alice brought happiness to everyone, because of her deep sincerity, genuine honesty and her amazing quality to make everyone feel truly special. Her husband of 56 years, Lester R. Bowen Sr., is deceased. She leaves three children, Alice L. Bowen of West Springfield, Colonel (Ret) Lester R. Bowen Jr. and his wife, Sara L., of Wilmington, N.C., and Lynn C. Goodhind and her husband, David R., of Amherst; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, living in Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Colorado; a brother, William F. Dempsey and his wife, Lucille R., and Myra Dempsey, the wife of her late brother, Matthew J. Dempsey, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins living in the Berkshires and as far west as Ohio. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Memorial Service in honor of Alice will be Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 11 a.m. at South Congregational Church, Maple Street, Springfield. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to Hospice of The Fisher Home, 1165 N. Pleasant St., Amherst, MA 01002.

My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to the Bowen family for the loss of your loved one Alice. During such times, we draw comfort from God's word. Jesus said at John 5: 28, 29: "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out." And Revelation 21:4 tells us that very soon pain, mourning and even death will be no more. Until that time, may you cherish the pleasant memories and rest assured that the God of all comfort, Jehovah, will sustain you.

Dear Lynn and family,
I was so saddened when I read of Alice's passing. Whether it was just seeing her smiling face at her door when we'd pull into the condos after a tough day or just a quick chat every now & then, she was the kindest, sweetest next door neighbor anyone could hope for. The boys and I will always remember her. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time.
