Ann Frodey-McInerney Obituary

Dr. Ann E. Frodey-McInerney

1954-2010 PITTSFIELD Dr. Ann E. Frodey-McInerney, 55, of Churchill Street, Pittsfield, died Sunday, June 6, 2010, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Nov. 24, 1954, the daughter of David and Katherine Jones Frodey, she was a graduate of Craig Elementary School in Somerville, N.J., and a 1973 graduate of Bridgewater High School in West Bridgewater, N.J.

A woman of diverse interests and talents, Dr. Frodey began her college education earning her B.S. Degree in biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Dr. Frodey spent the early part of her professional career in Pittsfield working for GE Plastics in Marketing and Development.

Within reach of her Masters Degree, with just the final thesis to defend, Ann learned she was accepted to University of Massachusetts Medical School and turned her entire attention to medicine. She graduated from UMass Medical in June of 1985, and immediately began her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Berkshire Medical Center, completing her training in 1988.

Since that time she has provided primary care internal medicine in Pittsfield until the time of her death. She also followed her interests in occupational medicine. Over the past decade her practice consisted of providing care at the medical clinic at SABIC Innovative Plastics (formerly GE Plastics) and at a private office in her home.

She was a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a member of the American College of Occupational Medicine. She was a member of the Medical Staff at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield since finishing her residency training. She was also a member of the Berkshire District Medical Society and the Massachusetts Medical Society.

Throughout her adult life, Ann triumphed over a number of limiting health issues. A cancer survivor just out of medical school, she celebrated each passing birthday with genuine enthusiasm. One of her great gifts was that when her physical limitations prevented her from pursuing one endeavor to its fullest, she would adjust her thinking and refocus her efforts to make the most of her numerous gifts. Therefore, as she was less able to pursue her interests as an expert windsurfer, horsewoman, construction boss, landscaper, gardener, hiker, and skier, she conquered the world of gourmet cooking, beading, and jewelry making. Her innovation and creativity with regard to these pursuits was truly remarkable.

After one, or two, samplings of a complex meal at a fine restaurant, she could effortlessly recreate it at home. She loved nothing better than to be the "hostess with the mostest" for large groups of family and friends at formal and informal get-togethers.

Throughout her life she enjoyed science fiction and fantasy books and movies. She was a sucker for chic flicks.

She leaves her husband, Dr. Michael McInerney; her daughters, Lauren McInerney and Elise McInerney. She also leaves her parents, David and Katherine Frodey of Clifton Park, N.Y.; her brother and sister-in-law, Steven and Meg Frodey of Clifton Park, and Michael Frodey of Clifton Park and his finacee, Kathleen Belisario.

Also left to grieve are her mother and father-in-law, Dr. Robert and Gloria McInerney of Pittsfield; and her husband's siblings, Alice McInerney of New York, N.Y., Eileen McInerney of Fort Collins, Colo., Peter McInerney of Denver, Colo., Patrick and Cindy McInerney of Kents Hill, Maine, Joe and Ariel McInerney of Auburn, Calif., Beth and Bob Clarke of Carlisle, Mass., and Dr. Thomas and Heidi McInerney of Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

She will be fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours for Dr. Anne E. Frodey-McInerney will be held Friday, June 11, from 2-5 p.m., and from 7-9 p.m., at the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 13, at 12 noon at the Sons of Italy ITAM Lodge No. 564, 93 Waubeek Road, Pittsfield, with refreshments to follow.

Dr. Frodey was very grateful for the wonderful care she received at Berkshire Medical Center's ICU/CCU and Telemetry units over the past six months.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Ann's memory to the Berkshire Medical Center's CCU/Telemetry Fund, Development Office, Berkshire Medical Center, 725 North Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.

I'm so sad to hear of the passing of my friend Ann. We were close friends at Bridgewater-Raritan West High School in New Jersey. I remember her as a beautiful young woman who looked forward to her life and all it had to offer. It sounds like she became the person we all knew she would be - she dreamed of being a doctor and she loved being with her friends and listening to music and learning about almost everything. She wanted to make the world a better place and she knew she could help do that. She taught me how to ski but I could never fly down the mountain like she could.
My condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.

It was with great sadness that I learned of Ann's passing from the Rensselaer Alumni magazine. I had the honor and joy of working with her on the Grand Marshal Week Committee in 1977, and her enthusiasm and ideas made it a highlight of my college career.

To her family and friends, I cannot imagine your feeling of loss, even after this time. Know that she touched many lives, more than anyone will ever know, and always for the better.

Somewhere in time's own space
There must be some sweet pastured place
Where creeks sing on
and tall trees grow
Some paradise where horses go,
For by the love that guides my pen
I know great horses live again.
~Stanley Harrison

I first met Ann when I was helping my dad unload hay in to her barn a long time ago. We hit it off right away and eventually I discovered that we both worked at GE. That day I not only gained the doctor I had always been looking for, but also a great friend to enjoy horse and many other discussions with. My heart goes out to your entire family. Ann was beyond special and she would literally shine when she spoke of her family, her horses and her home. She took such good care of all of us and the world is a better place because of her. She always wanted me to come and try out her saddles that she loved so much and I always thought we would have the chance to ride together. Rest in peace Ann, I hope you are looking down at us from the back of a beautiful horse.

Dr. Mike, Lauren & Elise and all of Ann’s family, please except my heartfelt condolences for your loss.

Dear Ann, it is so difficult to fathom that you are gone. It was such an honor to know you and I feel so blessed for the time we had as neighbors. You were truly an amazing wife, mother, Doctor, teacher, friend. I have such favorite found memories of you. Orchestrating the neighborhood 4th of July and New Years Eve parties. The new t-shirts you would design and make for us all every 4th , your amazing garden fresh vegetables every summer and homemade breads year round. Watching the weather take a turn for the worse with high winds and even rain but as long as there was no lightning we could count on you & Mike dragging out the windsurfers and riding the waves. It was empowering to witness your fearlessness. The fabulous multiplex playground/playhouse you designed and let us help you build between our houses. That playground brought countless hours of fun not only to our children but to all the kids living and visiting the neighborhood and still does. Thank you Ann from all of us who shared horseback riding adventures with you. One of the most fun days I ever had was the time you navigated us on horseback from Churchill to your old backyard and the horses were so happy to splash and play in the water. Thank you so much for being such a wonderful role model for Ryan, you had such an impact on him growing up. He loved to spend time with you and learn from you, borrow & discuss your favorite sci-fi books, and share your love for Star Trek “The Next Generation”.
Ann Frodey-McInerney, Your talents were endless, your zest for life, strength and endurance inspiring. You are one in a million and will never be forgotten.

We come only to dream
It is not true
That we come to earth to stay
Like a flower in springtime
Or a bird who rests on a branch for the night
We come only to dream, not to stay, only to dream

We all pray that Ann awakens soon from her dream of her life here and remembers how much she was loved
