Arthur Colwell Obituary

A lifelong resident of Pittsfield, Arthur (Art) Bernard Colwell, age 92, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Art was the son of the late Arthur B. and Katherine (Carty) Colwell. He attended St. Joseph's School, graduating in 1950, and went on to honorably serve his country as an Air Force reservist during the Korean Conflict, stationed at Hensley Air Force Base in Texas.

He worked for many years at General Electric's Naval Ordinance Division, where he worked as a machinist and later as a quality control manager before his retirement from G.E. in 1988. Art was a proud member and union official of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE).

A keen observer of Pittsfield politics, Art could often be found holding court at Del Gallo's Restaurant and Tavern. He served for many years as a member - and later chairman - of the Pittsfield Zoning Board of Appeals.

Art was known for his deep love of Boston sports and his enthusiasm for good food, especially Chinese cuisine. He charmed friends and family alike with his wry Irish humor and sharp commentary. Never afraid to laugh at himself, he passed along that gift of humor and perspective to his children.

He was the devoted husband of the late Jeanne (Haines) Colwell and was also predeceased by his daughter, Kathleen, and brothers Joseph (Dick) and John (Jack). Following Kathleen's passing, Art became a longtime supporter of the Jimmy Fund.

He is survived by his daughter, Debby Kelly, and her husband, Peter, of Gloucester, MA; his son, Michael Arthur Colwell, and his wife, Kristie, of Stoneham, MA. Art was the beloved grandfather of Steven Crimlisk (Amy), Laura Thomas, Matthew Colwell, and Rebecca Colwell and the proud great-grandfather of Calvin Thomas, Aurora Crimlisk, and Selene Crimlisk.

The Colwell family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff at Hawthorne Hill and Care Dimensions, both of Danvers, MA, for their kind and compassionate care of Art in his final years. Services will be private.
