Caleb Mitchell Obituary

Caleb H. Mitchell of Pittsfield, MA, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at the age of seventy-five. He was the seventh of eight children born to the late Joseph and Clarissa Mitchell. After graduating in 1968 from Pittsfield High School, Caleb attended the former Baptist College of Charleston, South Carolina on a track scholarship. He worked in the Charleston schools before moving back to the Berkshires and taking up a career assisting those with mental health needs in Northern Berkshire County. After completing his Masters Degree in Environmental Science from Antioch University in Keene, New Hampshire, Caleb became Pittsfield's Conservation Agent, a position he held until his retirement in 2012. Even into his retirement, Caleb continued to work for several of the hill towns of Berkshire County, servicing their environmental needs.

Caleb was a true outdoorsman. He loved gardening, hiking, camping, cross country skiing, running, golfing, tennis-anything that involved being outdoors. Caleb travelled, hiked, and camped in the Grand Canyon multiple times. The guy could pick up any sport, proving his natural athletic abilities, putting all of us to shame! Caleb loved golfing and would do so in the Berkshires and other places he traveled to whenever the opportunity presented itself. Caleb could list the names of trees, plants, and mountains, right down obscure rivers or streams. He spent nearly every day at his beloved cabin in Windsor, MA, where he often hosted his children, friends, and relatives.

Caleb served as a member of the select board of the town of Windsor, MA, and was town administrator for Peru, MA from 2017-2021. At the time of his passing, Caleb was the Conservation Agent for the town of Hinsdale, MA. Caleb was a prominent official in the Pittsfield and Berkshire County area.

Caleb is survived by his daughter, Clarissa, and his two sons, Alton and Sawyer, all of Pittsfield, MA. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters; Peter of FL, Joel of NH, Mark of Pittsfield; his sisters, Vicary Whitaker of TX, Meribah Haughey of FL, Edwa Meek and Tami Grandshaw, both of SC. In addition, Caleb he leaves behind by his closest friends, John Wimmer, John DiTommasso, and John Forrest.

Yesterday

To the Mitchell family,
My deepest sympathy for the loss of Caleb. I first met him when he was the Pittsfield Conservation agent. My husband Mike, Caleb´s cousin, was in need of some expert advice and Caleb was the man to go to. He was very professional and a big help to us. The world has lost a genuine gentleman.
Sincerely,
BeckyKnox
