Charles Carmelo Messana

1933 - 2023

Charles Carmelo Messana, age 90, of Hinsdale and formerly of Dalton died at home Monday, July 24, 2023 surrounded by his family after a recent decline in health.

Born on June 20, 1933, Charlie was one of 6 children of Italian immigrant parents, Ignatzio and Alphonse Vaccaro Messana. He was born and raised in Pittsfield and was a graduate of Pittsfield High School. He went on to honorably serve in the US Army during the Korean War. Upon his return home, he began his career with the former Western MA Electric Company. He retired in 1991 as a line supervisor after 38 years of service.

When his kids were younger, he worked with the Junior Leaders Program on North Street. He attended countless sports games for his children, and later his grandchildren, and instilled a deep love for hockey in the entire family. Charlie was proud of his large family and was a wonderful father and grandfather.

He loved to golf and was a former member of the Skyline Country Club. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially poker, and looked forward to his many trips to the casino.

Charlie was fond of the outdoors and was a talented gardener and landscaper. A skilled woodworker, Charlie was the go-to person for anyone who needed a hand with a construction project, often putting his own projects aside to help others.

On October 24, 1958, Mr. Messana married the former Linda Rae McColgan in Pownall, VT. This coming October they would have celebrated 65 years together. They lived much of their married life in Dalton and lived for 4 years in Ellenton, FL. They returned home to Massachusetts in 2018 and made their home with their son Dennis in Hinsdale.

In addition to his wife, Charlie is survived by their three children, Dennis M. Messana (Mary-Lynn Toomey) of Hinsdale, Dean A. Messana (Karen) of Lanesborough, and Lisa Messana LeBeau (Victor) of Dalton. He also leaves his grandchildren, great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild, Marissa M. Banks (Tyrrelle) and their children Pariss and Jadae, Nicholas M. Messana (Alexia), Dean M. "Deano" Messana, Jr., (Makayla), Mitchell M. Messana, Mollie M. Messana and her daughter Lilliana, Cory Nardin, Chad Nardin (Ashely) and their children, Kennidie, Trenttan, Finnieann, and Atticuss, Christine King (Adam) and their children Brittney (her daughter Ariel), Owen, KK and Kaylee, Becky Melle (Ben) and their chldren Dylan and Braedyn, Justin Pollander and his son Jackson, Josh LaBeau (Megan), Josh Pollander (Hailey), Keith LaBeau (Brooke) and their children Cameron, Tanner, Evan, Chris, Macie and Kinsley. Additionally, Charlie leaves many nieces, nephews and extended members of the Messana and McColgan families.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his five siblings.

All are invited to join with Charlie's family for a Celebration of Life on SUNDAY, July 30th from 12-4PM at the Italian-American Club of Pittsfield, 203 Newell St.
