David Stone Obituary

January 12, 1971 - January 14, 2024

David Francis Stone, 53, died on a bright, cold Sunday morning, at his parents home in Lee, MA.

David was born January 12, 1971 in Lawrence, Massachusetts; he was the first born son of Susan Davis Stone and Robert Francis Stone.

David showed tremendous promise as a young man excelling in music, athletics and academics. He played the piano, pipe organ and saxophone.

A graduate of the Lee High School Class of 1989, he went on to Ithaca College, where he intended to play football. Sophomore year, he transferred to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He served in the Army Reserves during his time at UMASS.

Tragically, David suffered a catastrophic high level spinal injury in May of 1992. The diving injury left him paralyzed from the neck down, at age 21. He would eventually regain some movement in his left arm, which allowed him to drive his wheelchair and increased his independence. David was not deterred from his goals and completed his studies in Economics graduating in the Spring of 1996.

Following his return to the Berkshires, David earned a certificate in computer programming at Berkshire Community College. He landed a job at the Lenox Library, tutoring patrons in the workings of the internet. He would go on to work at the Berkshire Eagle developing their first webpage.

When illness forced him out of work, he spent time composing music, reading, singing in the church choir, playing Scrabble, watching his daughter swim and enjoying the company of his friends and family.

Besides his parents, Susan and Fran, David leaves the love of his life, his wife of 30 years, Pamela Morehouse and the joy of his life, his daughter, Asa Frances Stone. He leaves two brothers, Noah Webber Stone and Micah Stone along with their respective families. In addition, he leaves a large, loving extended family and his good friend, Sam Patel.

The family wishes to thank all who were involved in his care through these years, especially his caregivers Henry Dozier, Ben Wibby, Derek Scully, and John Missagia.

David will be remembered for his intellect, his heart, his good looks and the remarkable way he carried himself through some really difficult times. He was well cared for and well loved. He will be missed beyond measure. Pam and Dave shared a great love story and great love stories never die.

A service will be held on Thursday, January 18 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Lee, MA. There will be no calling hours. Donations in his memory can be made to the Berkshire Music School in Pittsfield, MA or a charity of your choice.

David was a French student of mine at LHS. I remember his talent when playing the sax- the feeling he had in his music was just beautiful. I also remember how athletic he was and how much he added to the football team. I saw him years later at UMASS and was so impressed by his courage and strength. He and Pam were two of my favorite students who turned into an amazing couple. My heart goes out to Pam and his whole family.

Rick and I send our deepest sympathy. Dave was a super nice person. Always friendly to each of us growing up. Especially in HS. I will always remember students teasing him and I that we would one day get married and have little pebbles. Obviously because he was a Stone and my Maiden name was Rock. Lol! It was funny to both of us. Pam we are so sorry for your loss. Very sad!

To all the Stone family I am so sorry to hear of David's passing. I remember watching him throughout his successful high school years as a teacher at Lee High. Years later I observed first hand how he had overcome difficult obstacles and was driven to success as we both took a computer course at BCC. May you feel comfort in your warm memories of David.

Mr and Mrs Stone, Pam and the rest of the Stone family my condolences on your lose. It has been more years than I can remember the last time I saw David. We were the best of friends with Brian Turner, when one got in trouble we all got in trouble. David taught me to drive on his red Subaru. We´d go just north of Boston to see Pam in school. The memories we made have been with me a lifetime. The world is a lesser place without him but heaven is a little more fun. David do me a favor play Jump by Van Halen like you did one church morning and let the angels know your there. Rest in Peace my friend till me see each other again.

I´m truly saddened to see this today. I met David years ago when his grandmother lived on Tyringham Rd. He became a part of our Tyringham Rd family, where playing football and wiffle ball became a staple of our youth. Always a smile on his face. May God bless you Dave. My deepest sympathies to his family.
