Gary Sperlonga Obituary

Gary J. Sperlonga, passed away on September 20, 2021 at home, surrounded by his loving family.

Gary was born on July 5, 1950 in Pittsfield. He was the son of the late David V. Sperlonga, Sr., and M. Elaine Gillette Sperlonga.

Gary was proudly employed out of Local 12 in Albany as an Ironworker. He worked many years for Berkshire Bridge and Iron in Dalton. Gary worked on many projects such as One Park Place in Connecticut, General Electric Building 100, Taconic High School, Boys Club, and the original Crown Plaza to name a few. He was part owner of Dave's Precast Steps, a business his father built. Gary made wrought iron railings, wrought iron furniture and many beautiful oak furniture pieces.

Gary was a jack of all trades. He built houses, remodeled kitchens, bathrooms, built beautiful decks, all with an eye for perfection. Gary's love was his lawn. There was not part of the lawn that was not trimmed, edged, mulched and groomed. He often joked with the grandchildren when they asked to go outside and play and he would say "Where in the street?" He wanted to protect those precious mow lines.

Gary would travel to Colorado with his wife Vicki and her family always knew Gary would need some oxygen for Mile High Denver and Pike's Peak. They traveled to Ireland, cruised the islands, Bahamas, Cancun, Las Vegas, Atlantic City and Florida. He always had a "lawn sitter" while they were away.

Gary leaves his wife of 43 years, Vicki Sperlonga. Vicki was his caretaker for the last four years of his life. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, David Sperlonga, Jr., his sister, Donna Borden and her husband Joe; as well as his beloved dog, Digger. Vicki always joked that he loved Digger more than his wife.

Gary also leaves his children, Gary Sperlonga, Jr. (Angie), Erica Sperlonga, and Scott Stone (Debbie). He leaves three grandchildren, Gage Sperlonga, Amy Stone and Zachary Stone (Lindsey).

He also leaves a great-grandson that he adored, Levin James Stone.

He leaves his sister, Lori Bertoldi and husband, Edward. He leaves his nephews and nieces, Shawn Borden (Cindy), Jamie Borden, Jose Borden, Devin Sperlonga (Tina), Darrin Sperlonga, Danielle Sperlonga, Caitlyn Ziobrowski (Steve), Lindsay Bertoldi and David Bertoldi and many cousins - and one who visited him regularly, Jack Curley.

Gary was a member of the Elks Lodge 272, the Polish Falcons and Local 12 Iron Workers.

Gary and his wife Vicki want to send special thanks to his caregiver, Tina Wilson, who made sure Uncle Gary had everything. Also thank you to HospiceCare in the Berkshire for their help.
