George Stevens Obituary

George Stevens

1947 - 2016 PITTSFIELD George Crawford Stevens, born August 5, 1947, in Pittsfield, MA to Georgianna Fulker Stevens and Crawford C. Stevens, lost his two and one half year battle with pancreatic cancer on January 24. Educated in local schools, he graduated from Wahconah Regional in 1966. He worked at several pluming and fire protection engineering firms in Boston and southeastern MA. He moved with his family to Marion, MA, where he continued the same work, adding lobster fishing before work each day to his activities. He opened and operated Marion Gun Shop, along with doing taxidermy. He also became a part-time police officer with the Marion department. After several years of enjoying life near the ocean, George returned to The Berkshires to open GC Stevens Taxidermy Studio in Lanesboro, where he also joined the police department, and later became building inspector. He then turned to construction, built several homes throughout the area, and designed and built Par 4 Family Fun Center, bringing the excitement of go karts, bumper boats, and batting cages to The Berkshires. A man who loved life and work, he did an amazing job of enjoying many diverse businesses and past times. His next step was to operate a used car business, GCS Auto Sales. He became a licensed auctioneer. After the sale of the business property, he went back to the drawing board and designed, developed, and patented the Plumbatube, a concrete column alignment tool to keep forms plumb and square while pouring concrete. Of all his many accomplishments, his pride and joy was the first class motorhome he built by converting an Eagle motor coach. He loved traveling in his bus which he named Eutopia. When his activities slowed down, he repaired and restored old AM radios. He then became a HAM radio operator. Never one to shy away from controversy, George was often found leading a fight for the rights of an individual in the face of proposals for new restrictions. He enjoyed pulling pranks on his friends and co-workers. Known as the "Chief" by his young employees and children's friends, he was a dedicated family man. George leaves his wife and high school sweetheart, Joanne Iwanowicz Stevens, whom he married on August 5, 1967; his son, George C. Stevens, Jr. and wife, Karen, of Dalton; three daughters, Laura Ling and husband, Christopher, of Vernon Hills, Illinois, Amy Sommers of Dalton, and Holly Leahy and her husband, Patrick of Norton, MA; sisters, Marlene Zawadzky and Georgianna DiSefano and her husband, Tony; sister-in-law, Ophia Stevens; eight grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Stanley Iwanowicz and John Iwanowicz and wife, Janet; sisters-in-law, Anne Cerveira and husband, George; Theresa Atteridge and husband, Timothy, Elizabeth Gniadek and husband, Robert, Cynthia Iwanowicz and Mary Whitaker and husband, Donald, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, brother, Covington Stevens, sister-in-law, Rita Stevens, and three nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for George Crawford Stevens will be held Friday, January 29, at 9a.m., from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10a.m., at St. Patrick Church in West Stockbridge celebrated by the Rev. We were so fortunate to have George and Joanne as our first neighbors at TGO. We fondly remember all the times we spent together while in Florida. God has received a special angel but all of us have lost a truly great person, friend, father, husband and conservative.

Joanne and Family,

So sorry to hear about George. You are in my prayers. What a great guy you were married to. I remember all the good times we had at Mt. Greylock soceer games when our girls played. He was always there helping and cheering.
Those memories will always be with you.

A renaissance man in his own right, the Chief remains, and will remain, larger than life in the memories of many (especially me). Several of my most rewarding childhood recollections revolve around his intense gaze, strong guidance and contagious, big-hearted laugh. The lessons I took from the Chief (and the 'Mrs. Chief') have provided me compass for decades since and have paid dividends in both happiness and finance. A family man to endear and a man's man to respect and (if you crossed him) fear, George Stevens was a one of a kind. I will cherish the time he was generous enough to share with me.

My most sincere condolences to the Stevens family. Please know that I miss you all so very much and am thinking of you on this sad day.

Dear JoAnne,
We send our sincerest condolences to you, your children and your wonderful brothers and sisters and their wives, husbands, children and your beautiful extended family.
We, to this day, have the photo of you and George on your wedding day, that you sent to us.
Although distance has separated us all of these years, II, your first cousin ( third born in our extensive first cousins numbering 31) have always held you dear.
George, your husband, your high school sweetheart, the love of your life, had an exciting, lively career, in which he contributed so much to this great country of ours.
I am sure that there are hundreds and hundreds of lives that he has touch and his legacy will not be forgotten.
We sincerely wish you the best. We all know that Your beloved George surely must be contributing many ideas to the Angels and Saints and keeping them very busy, building new towers of clouds, guarding the babies that are up there with him, sharing his zest for life with all who are with him and getting a "kick" out of being there.
The photo of George is so handsome. His life is a testimony for all that is goodness.
JoAnne, please contact us when you have a chance.
With love and compassion for you and your family at this time in your lives,
Cousin Elaine M. Gwozdz Rondeau and Husband Gordon

To The Stevens

Can't express our sadness with the passing of George. He was truly a unique and amazing man. His talents were endless. His work ethic was tireless. But most of all his love for his family and friends was his strongest trait. Rest well knowing you made a difference in many peoples lives.

Although I hadn't seen George in many years I still have a lot of fond memories of working with him on the Lanesboro Police Dept. We was quite the prankster and always fun to be around.
