John Tullock Obituary

John William Tullock, Jr., the son of John W. and Elizabeth Marian Tullock, born in the Dewey Heights section of Cementon, Pennsylvania, passed away Friday February 10, 2023 of natural causes. John was born in Dewey Heights, Cementon, Pennsylvania on March 7, 1938 to John W. and Elizabeth Marian(Jardine) Tullock. In 1944 moved to Lakeland Florida and returned to Catasauqua in the fall of 1945.

The Tullock's lived in Catasauqua, PA where John went to Catasauqua High School until 1953 when the family moved to Great Barrington where he graduated from Searles High School in 1955. He attended Industrial Technical School in Boston and 1956 joined Naval Ordinance Department of G.E as a draftsman.

In 1957, John served in the U. S. Navy in Port Lyautey Naval Air Station (Kenitra), Morocco as a draftsman Petty Officer 3rd class and a disc jockey for Armed Forces Radio until 1959 when he returned to G.E.

John graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (1964) with a B.S. in Landscape Architecture and went on to Whitman & Howard, Engineers in Boston. In 1964, he married Maria Madeline Marsella and lived in Brighton, MA. In 1965, he attended graduate school at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor where he received a Master of Landscape Architecture degree. In his master's thesis he authored "Potential Recreation Areas of the Housatonic River" for the Housatonic River Watershed Association.

Upon graduation, he became Junior Planner for the Planning Board in Pittsfield. Shortly after (1968) he worked with Robert B. Deloye, Architect- Engineer-Surveyor. In 1972, he opened his office as John W. Tullock, Jr., Landscape Architect/Site Planner. His works included Dorothy Amos Park, Crowe Playground, Lebanon Playground, Yankee Orchards Park, and the City's Parks Master Plan along with residential and recreational projects. Served on the Mount Greylock Advisory Executive Committee for 10 years and served as president for 6 years. He served as Resident Engineer for the Department of Forests and parks on the development of road construction on Mount Greylock and Beartown State Forest.

In 1975, he began Teaching in the Landscape Design Management and Civil Engineering Departments at Springfield Technical Community College where he taught Landscape Drafting, Landscape Design I & II, Botany, Earth Forms & Structures, Architectural Drafting, Construction Estimating and Autocad.

He was also active in the Boy's Club youth hockey program as a coach for 25 years. He enjoyed supervising young golfers at Berkshire Hills Country Club in the Junior Golf program and playing golf with Businessmen's League serving as secretary-treasurer-scheduler.

He retired from STCC in 1998 and continued his Landscape Architecture practice until his passing, with several consulting clients; Conrad Decker, Real Estate Development, Consulting & Design, LLC and Berkshire Wetland Services.

He is survived by his wife Maddy and soul mate for 59 years, his son John III and Deb of Pittsfield, daughter Erin of Pittsfield and Wellesley, MA, son Anthony wife Susan of Burnt Hills, NY, and Michael and wife Clare of Pittsfield and nine grandchildren, John Noah, Jennie (Alfonso), Mary Elizabeth, Hannah, Andrew, Grace, TJ, Declan, and Caleb, one great-grandson, Elijah Smith, a brother, Timothy in Loxahatchee, FL., nephew Timothy, Jr., and wife Jillian with children Tessa and Sophie, and niece, Melissa of New Bedford.

He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Elizabeth Ann and Eileen (1967).

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial for John Tullock, Jr., will be celebrated Thursday, February 16, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Church in Pittsfield by the Rev. Steven Montesanti. Burial will be at a later date in St. Peter's Cemetery in Great Barrington. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., Pittsfield, MA are Wednesday from 4-7 PM. Maddy, I am so sorry to hear about John´s passing. I remember dancing the polka with him at a Christmas party many years ago. He lifted me off the ground and I´m sure that my feet never touched the ground for the entire dance. Such a nice man.

Maria and family, I'm so sorry to hear of Johns passing. I always enjoyed visiting with him when he came in for service and hearing the stories he shared over the years. He was 1 of a kind and will be missed by many.
