Josephine Smith Obituary

JOSEPHINE SMITH 1920 - 2008 PITTSFIELD Josephine F. Paladino Schmidt, Smith, 88, died Monday, July 28, 2008, at Lakes Region Elder Care, in Laconia, N.H. Born on May 22, 1920, in Scilla, Italy, she immigrated to the United States of America at age 6. Raised in New Jersey, she attended Douglas College as a music major. She later became a member of Phil Spitalny's All Girl Orchestra, and performed with Leopold Stowkowski's Orchestra, where she met the loved of her life, Charles James Smith. An active violin and piano teacher in Wellesley, she was soloist and first violinist in the Wellesley Community Orchestra, as well as soloist with the Boston Symphony Children's Series. She leaves three daughters, Joanne Mallove of Bow, N.H., Suzanne Howard, of Mendham, N.J., and Diane Lipowski of Massachusetts; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a brother, Sylvester Paladino of New Jersey. FUNERAL SERVICES: A memorial gathering will be Wednesday, July 30, from 9 to 10 a.m. at PHANEUF FUNERAL HOME, 243 Hanover St., corner of Union Street, in Manchester, N.H.. A memorial service will follow in the funeral home chapel at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Mrs.Smith may be made to The Alzheimer's Association, 1 Bedford Farms Drive, Suite 105, Bedford, NH 03110.
