I have another story about Ken that I would like to share. He was always in top physical condition. Both with weight lifting and running.....He told me about the job he had at the University. He delivered the Boston Herald Newspaper to subscribers all over campus. Back then it was a popular Newspaper and came first thing in the morning 7 days per week. Ken told me that he enjoyed the cash he made each week but more importantly he liked the conditioning. He told me he ran the route every morning, across campus, Up and down stairs....the money was collected on line...all he had to do was deliver......it paid off on the football field...he was never tired.......

I still cannot believe that Ken has left us. He was the most unassuming football prospect when came to UMASS LOWELL. He soon became one of the best players to have ever played there. I will never forget what a great person and highly respected teammate he was.
Best to all Family Members....GOD BLESS KEN.

This past week we had a meeting with a group of former football players at UML....The Athletic Department is trying to organize a reunion of players who were members of teams from the early club days and beyond......Ken's name came up during the discussion and many did not know that he passed away a few years back...he was remembered with a number of interesting stories of him as a great player.....Two things came up about Ken....1976 he received the team's UNSUNG HERO AWARD.....and in 1977 he received the team's MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARD......all awards are voted by members of the team.....I had the pleasure of being his position coach back then....he sure made me look good.....he was great....Dennis Scannell asst coach

December 19, 2020

It is now December 2020...word just reached us about the loss of Ken Gauthier. To say the least we are all heart broken beyond belief. I was in my first year as assistant football coach at then U Lowell, Ken had tried out for the team and we had projected him to be an impact player from day one.....two weeks into training camp he came down with an illness and withdrew from the team and actually returned home to finish the semester virtually.....we kind of lost track of him as we were trying to put a team together to compete in a solid league .....we actually won two games the first year....our first victory came against Bentley College on the very last play of the game....the post game celebration topped New Years Eve easily......the next season we had high expectations for we had a number of skilled players returning......including an unknown in Ken Gauthier.....He stood out right away in preseason....never said a word...hustled everywhere...won every sprint...when we finally began the season he was seeing action as fullback in the I formation.....we had an awesome All Conference tailback who was electrifying every time he handled the ball.....Ken became the starting fullback...he would carry the ball a handful of times but he was there to block...and block he did...after the first game he blocked so well but both of his elbows were badly bruised.....one of our assistants bought Ken hockey elbow pads that he wore from then on....he was spectacular.....we had a lot of success and eventually won 2 Club Football National Championships against some awesome teams...Ken was unassuming, strong, fast, great athlete, extremely coachable, and the hardest worker and leader. The one game we put Ken at tailback he ran wild......I ended up coaching at the now UMass Lowell for 18 years...7 as Head Coach.....enjoyed every single day...the players were awesome....I have many wonderful stories of my time there but I will share this one with you.....When the University changed Athletic Directors we knew our time was soon to be over...We were 35- 3 over one stretch but the geniuses upstairs had other plans that eventually led them to dropping football altogether.......We were the number one team in New England back then......as I was packing up all my belongings I took one last tour of our equipment room and noticed a rack of game jerseys that were no longer used...jerseys from the Club Football days.....I remembered one player that stood out above all the others....one that was so special because of how he was as a teammate and player....I took out number 32 Ken's number and brought it home to my closet were it has hung for decades...I had hoped some day to meet up with Ken and give him his game jersey....unfortunately that day will never come....I mailed the jersey to Ken's nephew Matt in Falmouth , Mass. last week.......May Ken Gauthier Rest In Peace......He was the Very Best ! to the gauthier family, i'm so very sorry to hear of kenny passing. kenny was the first friend i ever had, we met in kindergarten at highland school, up to 3rd grade. i remember my mom meeting us at the corner to walk us home {we lived on adele street } in winter she would pull us home on an old flexible flyer sled , me in front kenny in the back and i look over my shoulder and kenny would be paddling his arms as fast as he could, helping my mom and wanting to go faster . we'd get to my driveway and kenny would hop off and with that big smile of his he'd thank mom for the ride and he'd sprint fast the rest of the way home. my family moved around a bit and i didn't see kenny again untill i had the unbelievable luck of tackling him when i played for crosby and he for north jr high. getting up he said hey billy ...still with that big smile! i think he ran for like 200 yards that day against us. then we became teamates at taconic where kenny was our hero. helping win the state championship. i didn't see him again for a couple years when i was watching a game at western new england college and they played against kennys school, and he ran out of bounds right in front of me and said hey billy my old friend , still with that huge smile . we chatted for about thirty seconds, shook hands and that was the last i saw him. anyone who had the pleasure of knowing kenny was truly blessed, he was a great man and a lifelong friend allways helping someone and of course smiling the whole time. i am very proud to have known him and call him my friend. rest in peace kenny

Dear Karen, Tom and Tim,

I was so sorry to read about Ken's passing. I was lucky enough to have coached Kenny during his outstanding football days at Taconic. He was a pleasure to coach. His Senior year he led us to the County tChampionship and a victory in the Massachusetts Super Bowl. We never had to worry about Kenny. He always was prepared and gave us so many exciting runs. He was a Captain that truly led by example.
His positive outlook and his enjoyment in playing the game will always be remembered by the entire coaching staff. Thank you Kenny for giving us the privilege of knowing you and coaching you!
