PITTSFIELD -- Laura Alexander, 96, of Paisley Terrace died Saturday at home.
Born in New York City on Oct. 28, 1909, daughter of Israel and Frieda Linder, she was educated and attended design schools in New York.
In 1932, together with master leather craftsman Fred Jahn, she created a business in her name, Laura Lee Linder, in New York City, which designed and sold leather desk accessories for home and office. Three years later, the business was sold to the former Eaton Paper Co., which sold her designs under her name in the United States and abroad.
She received international recognition and awards, including one from the 1937 Paris World's Fair. She retired from Eaton in 1982 and began to design and consult for H. George Caspari Inc., a fine paper and desk accessory company in New York, working until her death.
A member of the T Club, she volunteered and was active for many years at the Berkshire Museum, the Berkshire Medical Center gift shop, the Berkshire Botanical Garden and The Mount.
In 1937, she married Wallace Utley Alexander, a vice president of City Savings Bank. He died in 1960.
She leaves a daughter, Ann A. Roosevelt of Alexandria, Va.; two sisters, Ethel Stoll and Claire Elioseff, both of New York City; a brother, Martin Linder of Long Island, N.Y.; a grandson, and a great-granddaughter.

I will greatly miss my dear sister Laura. I will miss her warmth, vision, wisdom and courage in her final years.
We often said how fortunate we were to have had wonderful loving parents and a secure happy family life.

We knew Laura socially and were inspired by her continued interest in all things political and how age did not deter her from keeping up with the times. In fact age was not an issue with Laura. Her perspective was always a joy to hear. She will be missed.

My Aunt Laura was a remarkable woman whose extraordinary creative career spanned over seven decades! She embraced life and was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. I will miss our enjoyable and lively conversations.
I am extremely grateful to her for being more than a sister, but a wonderful friend to Ethel, my mom, during the difficult times after my dad died.
With deep appreciation and profound sorrow,

Several years ago I had the pleasure of working with Laura as her physical therapist after her hip surgeries. During our treatment sessions we had long and lively discussions on many topics - family, events of the day and especially her work. She was so very creative at an age when most people simply exist day to day. Laura quickly became - and has remained - one of my very favorite people. She had such zest for life, a wonderful sense of humor and great warmth. I am deeply saddened to learn of her death and wish to extend my condolences to her family. A bright light has been extinguished.

I worked for Eaton paper for many years and saw first hand the wonderful quality of her designs.
Whenever her name was mentioned at work it was with awe and respect.

I have fond memories of visiting Mrs Alexander when I would bring or collect my son, Scott, who was a schoolmate of Simon. She showed me her work and I still have several of her desk assessories that remain very special to me. She encouraged me to start my own business and gave me advice as would a caring grandmother. I extend my sincere sympathies to Ann and Simon and her extended family whom I had not the pleasure to meet.
