Mark Newman Obituary

Mark Richard Newman, MD, 77, late of Alford, MA, passed away peacefully on December 9th. He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Lenore, and loving children, Bryan and Erica, his adoring grandchildren Eleanor and Loch, and his brother Fred and wife Sandra. He also leaves his treasured relatives in the Newman and Zisser families, and his many dear friends, all of whose lives he touched immeasurably.

Born to Isadore and Eda Newman, Mark grew up in Forest Hills, NY. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Queens College and received his Doctor of Medicine from NYU Medical School, where he also completed his internship and residency. As an internist in New York City, first in private practice and then as a founding member of Concorde Medical Group, Mark was the quintessential clinician. He respected his patients, spent time with them, and listened to them, not only about their medical needs, but about their lives, making him an excellent diagnostician. He was respected and admired for his gentle, caring manner and quiet intelligence by both his patients and fellow physicians.

Mark was a loving and generous spirit, prone to giant hugs and squeezes to demonstrate his affection. A true humanitarian, he treated all equally with attention and respect, no matter their position in life. As a husband and father, he was always there, supporting whatever path his wife and children wished to follow, as well as following his own.

Mark was a passionate hobbyist, first with photography as a young man, and then later in life with golf and cooking. He was determined always to improve, voraciously reading about those subjects, practicing and experimenting. As a decades-long member of the Country Club of Pittsfield, he doggedly and happily pursued golf. In the kitchen, he was a natural, cooking almost every home dinner for twenty years, using his senses and intuition to bring family and friends together for memorable meals and joyful gatherings.

Mark was loved by all whose lives he touched. He was warm, generous, giving, and, most of all, real.

I worked with Mark for 40 years he was my resident at Bellywhen I was an intern and later we became colleagues practicing internal medicine. He was an excellent physician and was beloved by his patients. He will be missed.

Dear Newman family,
Our condolences on the loss of dear Mark. We´ll never forget his caring and gentle nature, his hospitality and humor. He and Lenore frequently welcomed us into their home and he took great pride in preparing healthy and tasty dinners. At our final dinner together, Lenore prepared the delicious food while we chatted with Mark. He was still able to do a few things for himself but when we kissed him goodbye there was the tacit understanding all around that it would be the last farewell. It´s difficult to accept that this fine man, a true mensch, has departed. I know that the family and his many friends will remember him with deep love and affection. Love from Marilyn and Arnold Fish and our children Debra and David
