Martin Huban Obituary

Martin L. Huban Jr.

1926-2010 PITTSFIELD Martin L. Huban Jr., 84, of 19 Richard Drive in Pittsfield, died Friday at home.

Born on June 1, 1926, in Pittsfield, the son of the late Martin L. Huban Sr. and Grace Creelan Huban, he was a lifelong resident of Pittsfield. He was educated in Pittsfield schools and was a 1943 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

After high school, he also attended Officer Training School at University of Pennsylvania and enlisted in the Navy in June of 1943. He served as chief petty officer specializing as a signalman and morse code operator during both World War II and the Korean War. He served a total of forty-three years in the Navy, both active duty and active reserve duty.

After the war he was employed as a line assigner and supervisor with the New England Telephone Company, where he worked for thirty-seven years. He retired in 1984. After his retirement he also worked as a consultant for New England Telephone.

Mr. Huban was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a member of the Pittsfield Art League where he served as a past treasurer.

An accomplished artist and self-taught musician, one of his paintings, titled "3:00 AM" now adorns the walls of the maternity unit at Berkshire Medical Center. An avid reader, he also enjoyed building and flying model airplanes and visiting museums.

He leaves his wife, the former Rose T. Plummer of Pittsfield, whom he married on July 1, 1950, at St. Agnes Church in Dalton; three daughters, Barbara H. Novak and her husband, William, of Pittsfield, Kathleen H. Shaker and her husband, Michael, of Colonie, N.Y., and Ann Marie Whitney and her husband, Dennis, of North Adams; four sons, Christopher M. Huban and his wife, Valerie, of Orlando, Fla., Patrick E. Huban and his wife, Sharon, of Dalton, Timothy C. Huban and his wife, Karen, of Marietta, Ga., and Martin L. Huban III and his wife, Robyn, of Dalton.

He also leaves his sixteen grandchildren, Shana Spratt, Matthew Huban, Andrew Huban, Sara Novak, Adam Shaker, Tristan Huban, Emily Novak, Jared Shaker, Kellen Huban, Nicholas Shaker, Jaclyn Huban, Lauryn Huban, Nicole Campagna, Kelly Huban, Eric Huban, and Kevin Huban; a great great-grandson, Kalen T. Spratt; as well as his sisters-in-law, Gene Belland and Ruth Rolanti, and his brother and sister-in-law, Edmund and Susan Plummer.

MEMORIAL NOTICE: Martin L. Huban Sr., 84, of Pittsfield died June 4, 2010. A memorial service will be held at a later date and time to be announced. There are no calling hours. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Mr. Huban may be made to Hospice Care in the Berkshires or to the Relay For Life both in care of the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, which is in charge of arrangements.
