Michael LeComte Obituary

It is with profound sorrow that the family of Michael L. LeComte, of Mashpee, announces his passing on March 14, 2023. The son of the late Edmond and Hanna LeComte, Michael was born in Freising, Germany on March 25, 1946 and came to this country with his family, at the age of four. They settled in New Jersey, where Mike spent his youth. He attended Franklin Township High School, where he became captain of the basketball team and president of the senior class.

Mike met the love of his life, Carolyn (Philbrick), in the summer of 1965, when they were both 19, and were married on March 16, 1968, 2 years after he had been drafted into the U. S. Army and two months before he began his tour of duty in Viet Nam. He served in the Signal Corps, and was honorably discharged in 1969.

Mike pursued his college degree in electrical engineering at Kansas State University, graduating Cum Laude in 1973. He attained his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1976, three years after beginning his career with General Electric in Pittsfield, MA. He worked on projects like the Trident Submarine and the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. Mike was a Manager of Field Engineering, at General Dynamics, when he retired.

Mike and Carolyn enjoyed traveling and visited Europe on a few occasions. One of these trips was to Germany, where they found the house where Mike spent the first four years of his life - he spoke fluent German.

Mike was an avid chess player, achieving the rank of expert. Tennis was always another of his passions. He enjoyed many years of playing in the Berkshires, developing his game as well as many friendships, and then on the Cape, at the South Yarmouth Tennis Club, and Mid-Cape Tennis, where he forged many more close friendships. He was also a car enthusiast, admiring high-performance, sporty cars, enjoying many years of auto-cross with his Miata, and later, his BMW Z4. In the last few years, he discovered yoga and enjoyed taking a vigorous class. Mike also taught math at Berkshire County Community College after he retired from General Dynamics. After he and Carolyn moved to the Cape in 2013, he volunteered tutoring math at Cape Cod Community College.

He was a giving, caring person, a voracious reader, and besides tutoring, he spent much of his spare time driving for the Sandwich Council on Aging, and helping friends and neighbors when they needed a hand or a car ride to an appointment. He was an animal lover and was very proud of his rescue dog, Sammy. One of his most outstanding qualities was his sense of humor, putting people at ease and assuring smiles, if not outright laughter. He even told a joke while drifting into unconsciousness in the ER as his illness took hold. At the time of his death, he resided at Royal Health Cotuit.

Besides his wife, Carolyn, Mike leaves behind beloved daughters Jessica DiPaolo (Mike), and Theresa LeComte (Holt Murray), as well as eight very much loved grandchildren: twins Julianna and Sophia DiPaolo; Dylan Piontkowski; triplets Violet, Sienna, and Colton Piontkowski; Taylor and Sawyer Murray. Nothing made him happier than to enjoy the company of his family and imparting his wisdom and wit to the generations that followed. And corny "Grandpa jokes" were in his repertoire.

Mike leaves his loving sisters, Gabrielle LeComte, of Rehoboth, Delaware, and Denise Warren (Dennis), of Springfield, MA, who often sought advice and guidance from their big brother. They would be assured that his wisdom would be delivered with more than a modicum of wry wit. Mike also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Kate Philbrick of New Jersey, and numerous nieces, nephews, and their children.

Visiting hours will be 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21 at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A, Sandwich, MA. At 4:00, there will be a short ceremony, including a military flag ceremony. There will be no funeral, as Michael's wishes were to be cremated.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider a donation to the MSPCA or your local animal shelter/rescue center.
