Rob Grote Obituary

Rob Grote

1963 - 2016 NORTH ADAMS On Monday, February 8, Rob Grote, 52, shuffled off this mortal coil, surrounded by family and friends. A graduate of Canterbury School and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Rob worked for over 25 years as a restaurant manager, before returning to school to fulfill his dream of a career in education. As a special education coordinator at BART Charter School, Rob was passionate about coaching the basketball team and helping students secure college placement. As director of student services at Martin Luther King Charter School of Excellence, Rob devoted himself to advocating for the needs of all students. He was also very involved in working toward achieving the school's accreditation. A big man, in stature and spirit, Rob brought laughter and memories to every gathering he attended. A voracious reader, Rob loved to learn, to teach, and to debate: philosophy, sports, music and politics, always with keen insight and good humor. His quick wit and loyal nature earned him a large and diverse group of lasting friends. Rob enjoyed spinning a good story, and, even better, a good speech. He never met a microphone he didn't like, and often served as Best Man (and occasionally, officiant) in the weddings of his brothers and friends. Rob was a champion of the underdog who cared deeply about those who would've otherwise felt alone or helpless. Never beholden to a strict schedule, Rob would not hesitate to drop everything to come to the aid of a family member or friend in need. Rob relished his roles as husband, brother, father, uncle, and, most recently, as a very proud grandpa. Born in Buffalo, NY in 1963, Rob was pre-deceased by his father Bob. He is survived by his loving, patient wife of eight years, Jodi daughter, Regan Madore, her husband, Josh, and their daughters, Emily and Josie; daughter, Shannon Grote, and son, Dylan Grote, all of Granby, CT; his mother, Nancy Grote of West Lebanon, NH; his siblings, Virginia McAllister of Denver, CO, Tom Grote and wife, Moe, of Phoenix, AZ, Walter Grote and wife, Ann, of Winnetka, IL, Liz Grote and wife, Katie Hawke of Freeport, ME, and Andrew Grote and wife, Kaitlyn Smith of Weymouth, MA; and seven nieces and five nephews. For the past 14 years, Rob and Jodi called the Berkshires home, savoring the nature, culture, and simple life style. They loved their many pets, large and small, playing games, going to concerts, hosting Thanksgiving (several times each year), and tending to their small, bountiful vegetable garden. SERVICES: Family and friends are invited to join in a Celebration of Rob's life at 4:30p.m. Saturday, February 13, at the MassMutual Gallery at the Basketball Hall of Fame, in Springfield MA. Hawaiian shirts are optional. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rob's name to BART Charter School in Adams MA, or to the Martin Luther King Charter School of Excellence in Springfield, MA.

I learned of Rob's death quite by accident. We had not seen each other in close to 40 years (since the years he was freshman at at Canterbury and I was an instructor). Rob and I connected early during his first year when we realized we had each lost our father at the same age in our lives. Rob was on my basketball team and was a great contributor in skill and spirit. He had a joyful sense of humor. He was a happy, decent young man. My career took me from Canterbury after that first year but I surprisingly saw Rob, again, in DC on the Metro. He was attending one of the Georges (Georgetown or George Washington) as I recall, and I was working in the DC area. We talked for a long time and really hoped to stay in touch, but life intervened. Reading his story, it is evident Rob lead a productive and valuable life. I know he had much to offer. I send condolences to his huge family. I still remember him as a funny, hard working and happy kid from nearly forty years ago and I always will.

My deepest condolences to Rob's family--related and non-related (his students). Like most of us who worked with Rob at BART, I was constantly impressed by his passions: passion for his homegrown tomatoes; passion for getting Katie M., Zach W., and Tiffany A. to graduation; passion for inventing words and phrases that made me laugh with their playfulness; and most of all, passion to sit on the BART bridge bench and talk to a student, one-on-one, because she or he was the most important person in the world to Rob in that moment.

I am fortunate to have been close to Rob for years in the late nineties (and I adored Regan, Shannon and Dylan). He enriched my life in many ways with his extraordinary wit and charisma. My deepest sympathies to the family for losing him so soon.

Rob, I can't believe you are gone!!! Your personality was always bigger than the room you were in. You were such a great teaching partner and supportive friend when I became principal. I still keep expecting you to show up in my office to talk through the day. I am so proud of the work you've done and the lives you touched. You left the world better than you found it -- it just isn't fair you aren't around a little longer to do more good work.

Mr. Grote encouraged me me to follow the right path for me, and make my dreams come true, and more so, he was confident that I could do it. His passing is truly tragic, and I express the deepest condolences to his family, students, all all he reached out to.

My sincerest condolences to Rob's wife, family and closest friends. I worked with Rob 20 years ago for several years and even after all this time I can truly say one of the most enjoyable people I have had the pleasure to work with. His sense of humor, wit and good nature was a gift to everyone around him. Off the top of my head I can think of at least 10 phrases that Rob coined that are still cherished. My heart is heavy and my prayers are with you all.

I was so sad to hear of Rob's passing. I worked with him for about 6 years at Chili's. He always made me laugh. When I would see Rob was the manager on it made me happy, it could get crazy, but he always made it fun. To all of his family and friends, I was heartbroken to hear the news, because this guy was truly one of a kind. May your memories bring you comfort. With much love. Angela (Diliberto) Uriano

Each of us walks a path we must follow, often having many other paths intersect with our own, some for short distances, others, for a lifetime. It is the laughter, love, blessings, disappointments, hurt and tears that paints the path behind us and leads us to the path ahead. Each one gives us something to help guide us forward, while leaving footprints in our path behind.

May Rob Grote know that his footprints were left behind on the many paths that he came upon, including mine.

My deepest sympathy to his family, friends and co-workers. I will remember Rob fondly during his time at BART Charter Public School.

February 11, 2016

To All of Robs family, My deepest condolences and prayers that the memories you all hold will help you through this very sad time. I worked with Rob at BART and I can honestly say that he will be remembered by the students he served forever. He made sure they knew that their needs were always his top priority, and they knew they could always depend on him. He worked tirelessly for them with their academics and their needs as young people trying to navigate high school. He was always one of the first ones to volunteer for any task no matter the time commitment if it meant it helped a child. He will surely be missed by many, God bless.
