Robert Mottershead Obituary

Mr. Robert Mottershead formerly of Pittsfield, MA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 27, 2025. Born in Manchester, England, on May 18, 1929, the son of Charles and Jean Mottershead. He was educated at local schools in Manchester. He graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from Stretford Junior Technical College and continued his education receiving a graduate degree from Salford Royal Technical College (now The University of Salford) in Power Engineering.

Robert served in The British Royal Navy with the rank of Seaman/Able Seaman from 1947 to 1949.

He married the former Sarah (Sally) Anne Byrne of County Donegal, Ireland, on February 27, 1960 at St. Anne's Church in Stretford, Manchester.

Robert worked for General Electric Company of England (GEC) as a design engineer in the Transformer Division until 1969. Together with Sally and their two oldest daughters and dog they embarked on a new journey across The Atlantic to join the Transformer Department at GE in Pittsfield. He held several engineering positions including Design Engineering Manager until the closing of this department in 1987. He continued to work for GE as their Large Transformer Liaison Engineer in Muncie, Indiana, from 1987 to 1991 and then in Rome, Georgia, until his retirement in 1992.

Robert and Sally returned to their beloved home (affectionately called 121) in Pittsfield where they were most happy entertaining their family and friends. They especially loved spending time with their beloved six grandchildren.

He was a communicant of St. Agnes Church in Dalton, MA, a member of the GE Elfun Society and the GE Pensioners Club. He enjoyed stamp collecting, photography, gardening, the Red Sox and Manchester United Football Club.

Robert is survived by his three daughters, Deborah Evans and husband Jim, of Richmond, MA; Yvonne Grove and husband Nate, of Durham, NH; and Cheryl Mottershead of Amherst, MA as well as his six grandchildren Justin Evans (Meg), Jennifer Evans (Wyatt), Connor Grove (Kelsy), Keenan Grove and wife Jillian Kaufman Grove, Fiona Grove and William Grove and his close cousin and friend, Sylvia Hughes, of Wrexham, Wales, as well as many other cousins, and brother-in-law, Michael Byrne of Coventry, England.

Besides his parents, Robert was pre-deceased by his wife Sarah Anne (who just recently passed away on January 15, 2025) of 64 years, his sister, Joyce Dean and brother-in-law, Jack Dean of Rhyl, Wales.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff at Mount Carmel Care Center for their love and care of Robert.

Your dad was one of my very favorite patients over the years and I enjoyed listening to his stories about his children and grandchildren and how his smile brightened when he talked about your mom. He was such a lovely gentleman and so intelligent and always remembered to ask about my children. This was a beautiful tribute to a life well lived.

I worked with Bob in both Pittsfield and Rome, Ga. He was a big help in both places, helping me to make changes that I wasn't in a position to make myself.
Bob was a very smart man who made necessary and logical decisions.
I always enjoyed working with Bob. My condolences to his family

My family and I are so very so sorry to hear of the passing of Robert Mottershead. He and Sally were such very kind friends to our parents (Marge and Jim Griffith) and to all our family over the years. Even in her last years, my mother still enjoyed retelling some of Robert and Sally´s hilarious stories with such great affection.

My sincere condolences to Deborah, Yvonne and Cheryl - and all the family during this difficult time.
