Rodney Patterson Obituary

Rodney L. Patterson, 89, of Canaan, NY, died on October 10, 2024, at Wingate Residences in Pittsfield, MA. Born in Cozad, NE, on September 1, 1935, son of Milo and Ethel Patterson.

He earned a doctorate degree in Russian Literature from UCLA, Los Angeles, CA. He served in the Army, as an Intelligence officer stationed in Turkey, during the Korean war. His first teaching job was at the University of California at Davis, CA. Mr. Patterson later moved east, and taught at State University of NY Albany for 30 years. He retired in 2004, Associate Professor Emeritus of Slavic languages and literature at SUNY Albany.

Rodney was a poet and author of scholarly writings and translations. As an expert translator and interpreter, he traveled the length and breadth of Russia. With his wife Sally Patterson, he served as academic supervisor and adviser to American scholarly groups in Leningrad and Moscow. Sally (Hankwitz) Patterson died in 2007.

His book of poetry, Time is the Rider was published in 2016.

He is survived by a daughter, Clara Patterson, of Lenox, MA.

The Dery Funeral Home of 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield MA has been entrusted with Mr. Patterson's arrangements.

Dear Clara,
I was saddened to read of your Dad's passing. Such a nice and kind man, and so educated and accomplished. He and Sally made a great team, and they were both so proud of you. May your memories give you comfort and peace at this difficult time.
