William Teichert Obituary

Mr. William "Bill" Arthur Teichert, 83, of Cheshire, passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at Craneville Place of Dalton with his loving wife by his side. Bill was born in North Adams to the late Arthur and Edythe (Button) Teichert. He graduated from the Bennington Catholic High School in Bennington, VT in 1960. Bill immediately went into the United States Navy after high school, having been in the naval reserves for the previous two years. He served on the USS Keppler and the USS The Sullivans DD-537. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1963 and then went to work for Afco Lycoming in Strafford, CT as a test technician. Bill was an exceptional athlete and very proud of having played on the USS Sullivan's Softball Team when they won the East Coast Championship and Afco Lycoming's team won the Eastern States Industrial Championship in Louisville, KY. Bill fought a brave and inspirational struggle with courage and strength after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Never one to give up, he continued to be involved with sports by coaching football, basketball and the Special Olympics in Newtown, CT. He was also very active in community theater. He derived much pleasure telling people about his role as Captain Von Trapp in the "Sound of Music" and Mr. Ziegfeld in the "Ziegfeld Follies". Bill is survived by his wife of 27 years, Harriet (Nelson) Teichert; by his two sons, Steven Teichert of Stuart, FL and Robert Teichert and his wife Debbie of Palm City, FL; his three daughters, Tracy Walenda and her husband Stanley of Waynesville, OH, Deborah Musselwhite and her husband Mike of Temple, GA and Lisa Caputo and her husband Don Nauta of Montgomery, NY; five grandchildren, Trevor and Samantha Teichert and Jaden, Haley and Makenzie Caputo; a stepdaughter, Samantha Bruns of Cheshire; his brother Robert Teichert of Punta Gorda, FL and his former wife, Ruth (Flood) Teichert of Temple, GA. The Teichert family would like to thank all the caregivers that Bill has been blessed to have for their kindness and compassion during his long and difficult journey. Especially Craneville Place of Dalton where they cared for him with love, respect and dignity for many years. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 29th at 11:00 A.M. in the PACIOREK FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., Adams. Burial will follow in Cheshire Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday morning from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, 1208 VFW Parkway, Suite 301, West Roxbury, MA 02132. I´ve known no other person other than my own dad, who struggled with serious health problems, but did so with so much courage and strength. Bill was so very lucky to have a wonderful wife as Harriett, to help him thru his challenges over the last few years.
To have such a loving family such as Ruth, his former wife and their children together, Tracy, Steve, Debbie, Bobby and Lisa, is a special gift to have that type of loving support.
He left a path for others to follow that will continue to be a way through the darkest of times. For me personally, he was an outstanding example of how "not" to let MS win!
I love you Poppy. Bobby and I, will keep your memories by remembering and speaking of you often.

It has been over 60 years since Bill and I served together on USS The Sullivans (DD-537) . I know that Bill had a long and varied career after leaving the Navy, but as a former shipmate I still want to wish him "fair winds and following seas". As for his family, I know that the good memories that all of you have of him will sustain you during this difficult period.

To Bill´s dear wife,

We were so sad to read this. We loved Bill and remember him fondly as the "keeper of the gate" at Craneville Place. He would always greet us with a firm grip and loving smile. We truly enjoyed talking with you both. It´s amazing how you grow to love complete strangers in that setting. We´re keeping you and the family in our prayers.
