Ray Keller Obituary
Ray B. Keller, a cherished third-generation resident of Bigfork, passed away at the age of 90 on November 28, 2024. Born in Kalispell, Montana, in 1934, Ray embodied the spirit of the Big Sky Country through his love of the land, his pursuit of knowledge, and his unconditional kindness to all those he encountered.
Ray embraced life along the Swan River and channeled his Montana upbringing into a commitment to education, earning a bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of Montana and a master's in education from Montana State University. His Navy service between 1955 and 1957 as a crewman on a radar ship not only fulfilled a duty to his country but also added a multitude of tales to his storytelling vault.
In 1961, Ray married Barbara Daly, beginning a remarkable partnership that revolved around family and education. Together, they combined their life experiences and founded Reading Essentials. As the capstone of their professional careers, Reading Essentials exemplified their dedication to nurturing literacy in young students through personalized tutoring. Their collaboration produced three remarkable books: "The Gifts of Love and Literacy," "Reading Pals," and "Studying Made Easy."
Having pursued various careers, Ray started out as a backcountry guide in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. His professional path also led him to work at the Columbia Falls Aluminum Plant and serve as a trusted letter carrier for Kalispell. His varied job experiences led him to his calling as a guidance counselor and teacher. He shaped minds in communities such as Heart Butte, Fort Benton, and Browning.
Ray's community involvement stretched beyond his professional roles. He was supportive of programs granting books to new moms, fostering a lifelong love for reading in both young children and their families.
Ray's demeanor was marked by gracious softness, always paired with a hearty laugh and an eager ear for stories of days gone by. He was never short of a kind word or helpful advice, and his presence was both calming and revitalizing for his son, Ry Keller, (Serena), and his grandchildren Austin and Benjamin. Those who predeceased him include his beloved wife Barbara and his parents, Ben M. and Minna Keller.
Ray's life was celebrated at a graveside service on December 9th at Conrad Memorial Cemetery. We came together to tell stories as Ray would have liked, sharing laughter and memories of a man who gave so much and asked for so little in return - forever cherishing the joy he brought into our lives.
Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home is caring for the family.
