LAKEVIEW -- Shelly Marie Gilman, 53, of Six Lakes, passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 20, 2018.
She was born in Lakeview on April 23, 1965, to Lonnie and Sharon (Watkins) Outman. Shelly grew up in Six Lakes and graduated from Lakeview Community Schools with the class of 1983. Shelly enjoyed working at the Kent County Youth Camp and waitressing at the Old Homestead while attending college.
She continued her education at Grand Valley State University, where she earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1987 and her master's degree in 1996. Shelly was employed as an elementary teacher at Tri County Area Schools for more than 30 years.
Shelly married Robert "Bob" Gilman on Oct. 25, 2008, at New Life United Methodist Church in Six Lakes. Shelly loved her family, especially her grandbabies.
She enjoyed being active. Whether it was snowmobiling, hunting, fishing or going for a ride-along with Bob in the tow truck, she loved any excuse to enjoy the outdoors ... especially on a sunny day! She also enjoyed going to the cabin, baking, family gatherings and coffee ... you would seldom see her without a coffee cup in her hand.
She was a faithful member of New Life United Methodist Church. Shelly had a passion for helping people beyond the walls of her classroom, leading her to her involvement with Emmaus Walks and becoming a director with Chrysalis.
Shelly will be deeply missed by many. She is survived by her husband, Robert Gilman, of Six Lakes; her children, Shelby (Erik) Burr, of Mount Pleasant, Rachel (Jason) Wheeler, of Coral, Heather (Adam) Steele, of Six Lakes, Jeramee (Sarah) Gilman, of Blanchard, Andrew (Gabrielle) Gilman, of Stanton, and Robert (Kaitlin Papendick) Gilman, of McBride; her mother, Sharon Outman-Morgan, of DeWitt; step-mother, Sara Outman, of Stanton; grandchildren, Isaac, Brooklynn, Maddox, Owen, Natalie, Hudson, Henry, Charlee, Dean and Madisen; siblings, Rick (Kris) Outman, of Six Lakes, Kevin (Michelle) Outman, of Lakeview, Michael (Lisa) Outman, of Cadillac, Mike (Jennifer) Williams, of Sidney and Michele Williams-Townsend, of Alma; sister-in-law, Jane (Lonnie) Outman Hagen; nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Lonnie III, Katelyn, Patrick, Keelie, Braidy, Benjamin, Brock, Olivia, Gabriel, Sara, Sophia, Nathan (Rebecca), Jason, Hilary, Seth, Anna and Joe; and great-nieces and nephews, Dayton, Deacon, Layla, Wyatt, Tinlee, Shiloh and Sawyer.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lonnie Outman Sr., and brother, Lonnie "Buck" Outman Jr.
The family will greet friends at New Life Methodist Church from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, 2018. Services for Shelly will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, at the Tri County High School gymnasium, with Pastor Sue Babb officiating. There will be a visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Six Lakes, followed by a luncheon at New Life United Methodist Church.

We lost a great person who always had a smile and something nice to say. I don't have the right words to say because she was too good for any words I can write.
I am so sorry for your loss and will be thinking of the family in my prayers.

Sorry for your loss, and prayers for today.. it was touching to read in the news article about people being there for each other with a hug. In 2017, an outreach of love and prayers was given to me when my husband passed from brain cancer 5 weeks after diagnosis that helped me feel like I would get through it. But I knew I still ultimately held the responsibility to live in faith every day. We all hope that we live strong most days, but we also suspect that other days may be harder to do that. But what an amazing example of what it looks like to extend and to receive mercy in a difficult situation, blessings and peace to each one of you for supporting each other.

Bob and Family- so sorry to hear about Shelly, thou I only met her a few times and always when she was at work with you, attempting to get you to leave Work at some point during the evening.
What started as you taking care of my boats- developed into a great friendship over the years.
And I thank you for that
Thoughts and Prayers too you and your family.

Our condolences to the family and all of Shelly's friends. Her laughter was contagious and her faith was inspirational to those who knew her. I only knew Shelly for a short time through the Emmaus community, but it was great working with her each time. Shelly will be greatly missed but not forgotten. Prayers to all.

I will be praying for your family. There do not seem words sufficient in this time of sorrow but know that Shelly was loved and respected and will be missed by many. She was so kind and I will miss her hugs and smiles as well as her stories of fun family times. I am glad for the recent fun day at Klackles and the fun she said the family was having together on such a beautiful day. Your family will be in my prayers.

To Bob and all the family, I am so very sorry for your tremendous loss. I was blessed to know Shelly through Emmaus and serve with her a Chrysalis Flight. She was such a beautiful human being and a wonderful loving, faithful servant of Jesus Christ. Shelly was a blessing and the world is a better place because she lived. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have known her. You are all in my prayers. May God provide strength. ~ Kathy Dobie
