Craig Fischer Obituary

Craig V. Fischer completed his life in this world Monday, June 9, 2025 in San Antonio, Texas.

Mr. Fischer was born in Kermit, Texas on November 22, 1944. He graduated from Kermit High School in 1963. He attended college at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, TX. receiving a B.S. in Education Degree in 1967, Masters in Education in 1972, and Administrators Certificate in 1973. All of his work involved educating students in secondary schools at Mercedes, Prairie Lea, and Big Spring High Schools in Texas. Craig considered it a blessing to be able to work with students since he never married or had children of his own. Mr. Fischer served in the U.S. Army -Vietnam in 1969-1970 receiving Good Service Coduct Medal and Bronze Star Award.

At Big Spring High, he served as assistant principal for 27 years and was instrumental in establishing yearly Homecomings working with the Exes Association, organizing a BSHS Hall of Fame with the Student Council, and starting a Museum of the school through donations of school historical items by Exes. In 2001 the centennial of Big Spring School District was celebrated with a publication and historical marker, composed by Mr. Fischer and Janice Boardman Bond. Mr. Fischer especially enjoyed all the sports activities at the school -- doing announcing at baseball softball games and seeing the Steers football team almost make it to the State final in 1989. He served as Student Council sponsor for eight years (1973-1981) and ARD/Special Ed Chairman for all 27 years at Big Spring High. The Big Spring community - people, students, teachers - always held a special place in Mr. Fischer's heart.

Fischer held membership in the Association of Texas Professional Educators, Texas Retired Teachers Association, American Association of Retired People, San Antonio Audubon Society, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and the National Eagle Scout Association. He was also at times a member of Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs of Big Spring.

Mr. Fischer retired to San Antonio, TX and continued work as a substitute teacher in the Northside I.S.D. /San Antonio. Recently, he made numerous trips to Central and South America, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Spain, and Portugal.

Mr. Fischer was the oldest son of Elmer (Al) and Betty Fischer who both proceeded him in death.

His many trips and outings with his parents and brother and sister were always enjoyable.

He is survived by his brother Jeff Fischer/and his wife Sandy of Boerne, TX and by his sister Sally Rihn/and her husband Dayle of Lytle, TX.; also his nephew Clay Fischer/and wife Toni of Port Isabel, TX, and his nieces: Beth Zuercher/and husband Rob of Denver, CO, Sarah and Samantha Rihn of Lytle, TX. He was a confirmed and baptized Missouri-Synod Lutheran and member at times of Zion Lutheran Church in Kermit, Tx and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Big Spring, TX. At Southwest Texas State University - he served as President of the Gamma Delta Lutheran Association for two years. Part time work for the railroad in the summers was done in Kermit, Monahans, Odessa, Midland, Jal, Eunice, Eunice, N.M., and Lovington, N.M. (1963-1972).

Life on this earth was outstanding with great parents and family and many good friends. If Mr. Fischer had any influence in this world - he would hope that it was all positive and good.

Any transgressions to anyone -- please accept his apology. What a life! Thanks be to God! Thanks be to the cities of Kermit, Big Spring, and San Antonio, TX.
