Armand Anderson passed away at St. Vincent Healthcare on Oct. 18, 2012. Born to Arthur and Palma Anderson on Feb. 12, 1924, on a farm near Glenfield, N.D., Armand was the oldest of four children. He started school in 1930 in Glenfield and graduated from Sutton High School in Sutton, N.D., in 1942.
On Nov. 19, 1944, Armand married the love of his life, Joyce Green, in Mabel Lutheran Church in Sutton. They continued to live in Sutton until they moved to Chester, Mont., in the fall of 1952, moving one more time to Billings in 1998.
As a young man, Armand farmed for a few years near Glenfield, N.D., and then bought a service station in Sutton. Eventually he went to work for the Griggs County Road Department. In November of 1952, Armand, Joyce and their two small children moved to Chester, where he worked in the Ford Garage as a mechanic and later as the service manager. From 1963 to 1967, Armand was the road foreman for the Liberty County Road Department. In 1967, Armand finally got his dream job and began farming near Chester, where he farmed until his retirement in 1990.
For about 20 years, Armand and Joyce wintered in Arizona and enjoyed traveling the country with friends. When Armand wasn't traveling, he enjoyed gardening and taking care of his yard as well as telling stories, playing cards, and working on jigsaw puzzles with friends and family. Armand was a talented wood worker who enjoyed making crosses, afghan racks, and cribbage boards. He spent many hours reading his cowboy poetry books and attending Cowboy Poetry Festivals.
Armand was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joyce, of 64 years; parents; sister Avis Lowe; brother Lorris Anderson; and son-in-law David Smith.
He is survived by son Allen (Lynda) Anderson of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; daughter Lois Smith of Billings; grandsons Aden (Sherri) Anderson, Pastor Darrell (Emily) Anderson, Dakota Smith and Colter Smith; four great-grandchildren, Levi, Elizabeth, Megan and Jaime; sister Myrna (Harry) Camp; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to The Lutheran Center at P.O. Box 825, Billings, MT 59103 or to the charity of one's choice.
