Borghild M. Terland, 87, of Billings and formerly of Big Timber, passed away Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, at Billings Clinic.
Borgy was born to Ole and Anna Hegdal on the family farm on Swamp Creek, north of Big Timber. She was the fourth child out of the eight. Along with her sisters and brothers, she attended Swamp Creek School and graduated from Sweet Grass County High School. Much of her time as a child was spent helping to raise her siblings and work on the ranch.
During World War II, she joined the U.S Army and was stationed in Florida, where she was trained to be a nurse's aide. Just this last year, she was able to travel back to the former hospital, now a hotel, to show her daughters where she had spent that time.
Shortly upon her return to Montana, she married Olando Terland. They spent their first few married years in the Billings area, where they had their first child, Sharon. Later they bought the ranch west of Big Timber on the Yellowstone, where they raised sheep, cattle and their two daughters, Sharon and Diana.
Once they "retired" to Big Timber, she became very cross. That is, she really started to enjoy working on cross-stitches and crosswords. Her passion for crosswords continued throughout her life. The proof of this is the multiple notebooks with "helpful" reminders. She also enjoyed reading novels and especially enjoyed traveling around the country with her family. Her other passion was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She really enjoyed the visits, pictures and stories of what they were doing.
Borgy was preceded in death by her husband, Olando, and four of her siblings. She is survived by her daughters Diana (Walt) Baylis and Sharon Schott; grandchildren Kerri (Jason) Rigsby, Derek (Andrea) Schott, Stephanie (Matt) Cowen, Brian (Wendy) Baylis and Tami (Brian) Davis. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Kassi and Connor Rigsby, Maleah Schott, Blake and Caleb Cowen, Rhianne and Addison Davis.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at the Big Timber Lutheran Church. Inurnment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Arrangements are by Stenberg Funeral Home.
