Clifford Friberg Obituary

MISSOULA - Clifford Roland Friberg was born Feb. 14, 1908, to Fred and Alta Beatrice (Mack) Friberg at White Rock, S.D. When he was about 3 years old, his parents moved near Comertown/Westby, to a homestead strewn with Canadian glacial granite boulders. Every spring thaw would heave more rocks to the surface. Over the years, 30 to 40 stone boatloads of rock were "harvested" per acre and put into ever growing piles of knee-high to waist high piles. Gumbo mud also made for slippery, greasy, slick roads.
Cliff helped his father, who had an Avery steam engine. Fred formed a threshing crew and worked in the Scandinavian neighborhood. Clifford started driving wagons for his father when he was 14. Sometimes a rattlesnake was with the wheat shock at the end of the pitchfork when the shock was thrown onto the wagon.
In the Depression of the 1930s, Cliff worked in the CCC Forest Camp near Metaline Falls, Wash., in a dairy at an orphanage in Spokane, Wash., and at Fort Peck Dam (which was featured on the cover of the first LIFE magazine, 1936).
In November 1938, he married Rella Leah Followwill in Sidney. She died Nov. 30, 1977, in Fairview. While living in Fairview, Cliff worked as a mechanic for Collins' John Deere, and later for LaLonde Construction and Holly Sugar, both of Sidney.
He moved to Stevensville in 1979, and then moved to Missoula in 2003.
Cliff was nicknamed "Slim." He never met a stranger. He had an infectious laugh. He loved the mountains and the seashore. He visited Alaska when he was 80. Cliff planted thousands of trees in his lifetime. He saw his first movie and paved road in Spokane, Wash., in 1929. It had taken him and his family nearly a week to travel across the rain-soaked state of Montana to visit other family members in Idaho and Washington.
Cliff was immersed into the saving blood of Jesus and worshiped with Christians in Comertown, Fort Peck, Mona, Fairview, Sidney, Stevensville and Missoula.
With the last "LIFE" magazine being issued to Cliff on April 1, 2007, at the Village Health Care Center, Missoula, Cliff left beloved mountains and forest vistas to gaze in the Ultimate Paradise upon the Triumphant Lamb of God and to praise God's glory and goodness joyfully forever.
Cliff was preceded in death by Rella, his wife; parents; brother, Glenn; and sisters; Vera Onstad McCabe Chaffee and Gladys Peele. Cliff is survived by one brother, Raymond, of Olympia, Wash., and many nieces and nephews. His children include: Ron L. Friberg and wife Delores of Scandia, Kan., a daughter, Norma J. Altaffer and her husband Bill of Moorcroft, Wyo., and Gordon Friberg of Missoula. Cliff has eight grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and many friends in Christ.
His cremains will be interred in the East Fairview, N.D., cemetery near the Yellowstone-Missouri River confluence (Big Opening) to await the Resurrection Transformation

Gordon,
I was saddened to see the passing of your Father...cherish the memories!
"A life is like a song we write
in our own tone and key,
Each life we touch reflects a note
that forms the melody.
We choose the theme and chorus
of the song to bear our name,
And each will have a special sound,
No two can be the same...
So when someone we love departs,
In memory we find
Their song plays on within the hearts
Of those they leave behind."
May the quiet places of your heart
be filled with sweet echoes of love and memory!
